Yet, Ruben Cortez, a former member of the board of the BISD, has not paid the taxes due on the property as far back as 2016, according to a lawsuit filed December 16, 2021 in the 107th District Court.
Records indicate that Cortez had entered into paying arrangements twice - once with the Tax Assessor-Collector's Office and the other with delinquent tax collections firm Linebarger Goggan Blair & Sampson - and reneged on both after a few token payments.
It's not like they are scraping for pennies, principal Cortez – according to the BISD Salary Schedule – commands a handsome $100,000 (+) salary.
Cortez also filed as a candidate in the Democratic Party primary this March for the reconfigured Texas House of Representatives District 37. Two other candidates – developer Luis Villarreal and Harlingen commissioner Frank Puente – are also vying for the position.
How can we believe that Cortez – a freeloader – cares so much about protecting district residents and looking out for the taxpayer and the students of our area when he has not met his civic duties and is delinquent on his obligation to fund our schools and letting others bear the burden?
If you owed taxes as far back as 2016, do you think that you would be allowed to go delinquent that long? Elected office, it would seem in this case, has its perks, something Cortez is known to exploit. Got any friends at Linebarger Goggan who would have filed against anyone else years ago, but not against Cortez?)

Confiscations are rare. Most are allowed to go on a "payment program," which is taken like arroz y frijoles by most property owners in town. County hires a firm to track delinquency, but rarely does anything other than send out letters. You dont send a letter to a Mexican and then expect prompt payment.

Another factor, they are living beyond their means....that is why they do not pay the taxes. Expensive dinners, expensive clothes, new cars, jewlery, friends, presents, bills, credit cards, etc .....
They can also be rebels: not pay taxes to the government. The government owes them....mentality.

Confiscations are rare but there are tax foreclosures year round and properties are foreclosed on year round for delinquent taxes.
