The decisions has not been made yet by the Cameron County Commissioners Court, but due to tight funding, they may opt to place the second busiest early voting site in the county – the Brownsville Events Center – out of business.
"So here you have what any entity could want, a busy early voting site, and then it turns out that the county may do away with it even as their elections department struggles to increase voting turnout?," asked a political operative who has participated in most of the recent campaigns. "It's bad enough for the Republicans to pass voting suppression legislature in Austin, but now we have our local guys follow suit?"
Recent early voting turnouts on November 2020 and May 2021, show that the events center is only second to the Main Brownsville Public Library. For example, in the May 2021 early voting, the 346 votes there were second only to the main library's 1,991.
And in the November 2020 early voting, it drew more than half (8,837) of what the main library did (15,283).
Some commissioners said that the availability of funding from COVID funds that was available last year is not available now, and that the money sent by Arnold Schwarzenegger to open more sites and encourage voting had been depleted.
"We're talking about some $250,000," said Pct. 2 Commissioner Joey Lopez. "The center has not been ruled out yet, but we're looking for funding to see what can be done,"
Lopez said that GOP-sponsored legislation was making it more difficult to establish sites, or even to move them around. He said some legislation that will affect 2022 elections includes so-called mobile sites.
"Once we establish a voting site, we can't open one somewhere else," he said. "That site has to stay open all the time at the same place," he said. "We aren't allowed to move it."

When Democrats are prevented from outright cheating in elections that is voter suppression in their feeble minds.
With that said, there needs to be some type of suppression of stupidity with voters in Brownsville.
They keep electing unqualified idiots.

They can vote outside. The voters like the location, not the nice environment. People can vote outside.... just place the voting machines outside, and the voting booths outside.

The main reason I took my elderly parents to vote last time was because of the drive up voting at this location. Covid is surging, and they want to take it away? It shows that local politicians do not have a clue when it comes to Covid. In a Democratic area, Voter suppression is the last thing we should be getting from our local County and City leaders. Here is an idea, why doesn’t the city and county work together to offer a safe voting site for the voters? Closing the #2 precinct in the County? Really? Why not close a much less used precinct? I guess the health of citizens is not a priority to these clowns.

Poor Brownsville, even the city's top management is screwing off taking much needed revenue away from city coffers. How? Well, everyone at city managers office including administration staff park their personal car on metered parking spots daily, including the HR director. These people have no shame on parking on metered parking spots and you can identify them easily as their personal cars have a special permit issued by BPD exempting them from paying the meters. How ironic that the city manager boasts about "Total Alignment" when they are all too lazy to set the example.

The candidates are not honest. The good candidates do not run: no money, no conections, etc
