In Memoriam- Mr. Larry Warner
The Board is saddened to report that Mr. Larry Warner passed away on February 1, 2022. Our thanks to Mr. Ed Stapleton for the following words and goodbye to his colleague and friend.
“Larry Warner loved the law. He revered the law. He thought the law worked. (I would say more than the law deserves.) His identity was built around being a lawyer. The law did not always reciprocate his feelings, but he always forgave her and returned to the romance. He practiced law for more than 47 years, much in private practice, writing and arguing appeals and defending criminal cases. He also worked as a prosecutor and served as a Texas State Representative and School Board Member, though he was too honest and naïve to get rich in any of these.
He taught Latin before he went to law school, and he sometimes wondered about the career choice. He was a marksman with a pistol, a coin collector and a ham radio operator.
He scuba dived until his life insurance policy wouldn’t cover it. He also loved languages and enjoyed explaining the pluscuamperfecto in Spanish and the rules for making a vocative in Latin. I, for one, enjoyed listening to all this, though I know others would get impatient. If you couldn’t remember the historical person who made a famous quote, he could tell you.
He was also my go to guy for obscure legal principles when my memory fails me. “Hey, Larry, what are the enumerated crimes in the Constitution? Who has jurisdiction in this admiralty case? Who can request a severance under the Code? What are the standards for incompetence to stand trial? What happens when the legislature passes conflicting laws in the same session?”
For forty years, he was an exasperating friend, but a good friend. My hunch from watching and talking to him for forty years is he was also an exasperating, but good, husband, brother, father, and grandfather. At the end of the day, (we watched the twilight coming together), he loved too well – the law and his friends. And that’s enough for one life.”
