the artist is Jesus Helguera. He married a woman from Spain, and used her as his model -
This became the "ideal" of the Mexican. Very few mestiza women, and NO indigenous women ever lived up to this ideal. The image became popular because it was placed on a cigar box.... then on millions of calenders sent throughout the United States.
The Mexican Museum in Chicago even had an exhibit on Helguera's work about 20 years ago.
