WIND DAMAGE RACKS UP $200,000-PLUS COST AT VERMILLION

Discussion, consideration and possible action for emergency repair at Vermillion Elementary School.

Special to El Rrun-Rrun

Remember how gusty it was Monday?

Brownsville Independent School District maintenance workers discovered that the gusts of wind estimated to be between 30 and 40 miles per hour Monday stripped the 43-year-old roof at Vermillion Elementary, prompting administrators to move the students from the affected areas and the board to hold am emergency meeting today to address the problem.

Across the district, power outages were ported in some elementary schools, most notable Aiken Elementary that was still struggling with a power outage today.

Board members heard that the damage to Vermillion Elementary roof alone would cost in excess of $200,000, some of which will be paid by the insurer after BISD pays its deductible. And they voted to give Superintendent Rene Gutierrez emergency authority to approve the roof repairs after recommendations and costs are received.\

"We don't know the exact amount," said BISD board president Eddie Garcia. "Safety continues to be our number one priority. We have relocated all campus staff on campus to maintain operations. We are also sending maintenance and technology staff to assist with the relocation of technology equipment and furniture."

Garcia said that among other steps taken was the risk management staff to reach out to insurer. An insurer adjuster will be there on Wednesday and a roofing consultant will provide a complete evaluation and estimate of the cost by today.

Commenter Patrick Hammes, the chief organizer for Brownsville Educators Stand Together, thanked the board before they approved accepting and implementing a COVID-19 grant that will provide Personal Protection Equipment ($252,000), sprayers, and air purifiers for the the district campuses($786,112).

"Some of our members suggested the air purifiers when the district was considering what equipment to buy and you responded very quickly," he said.

The district applied Nov. 30, and got approval of the grant March 4. The deadline to purchase and receive all items is March 31.

"We're on a very short timeline," Garcia said. "Our administration and staff did a great job to meet the deadlines to apply for the grant.

The total amount of the grant is $1,572,113 and included a COVID-19 Awareness Health Fair and Carnival to be held March 26 at Sams Stadium and open to the public.

The Brownsville Independent School District maintenance department needs to close down and just subcontract all the work that needs to be done

RIGHT! Sub contract like Boca Chica Hwy or is it blvd or sm whatever. Sub contractors do a great job as coverup for incompentent administrators. They don't want to hire good maintenace workers to pad their own salaries.
Conjunto Bernal does the same thing but a bit smarter. He hires consultans at million, making him look good and demands salary increses daily. PLUS assistance GALORE...

No wonder this is the poorest city village town in the nation,
GOOD JOB ELECTED OFFICIALS lets all re-elect them again and again

Winds of 20-30 mph? I don't know where you were Monday. Where I was in Brownsville it was more like 30-40 with gust substantially greater.

Its like the tax department they want a down payment of 30% if you want to make a contract to pay back taxes. WHAT? YES 30%. First you got behind because you have no money or very little. Can't they figure that one out?
So if you owe them 30k your down payment to get a contract to pay your back taxes would about 10,000 dollars!

TIME TO LOOK INTO THE CC TAX DEPARTMENT Juanit, serious too many people can not get to pay their back taxes because of the requirement so they end up loosing their home and some elected official buying it really really CHEAP. VERY BAD...

If you owe 30K in property taxes then you either one of two things:
1- You haven't paid in a very very long time. Why? What did you do with your stimulus checks.
2- You live in a million dollar mansion. If this is the case you obviously can't afford it. Sell the house and downsize.

Words of advice. Don't spend more than what you make. You're not the federal government. You can't just print money. And you can only borrow so much before you get cut off.
Or just get on welfare and you won't have those worries.

Doesn't BISD have Escobedo insurance for these things

Got it wrong batman 30% of 9K is 3K and that is only a couple of years the complain here is the percentage charged to pay on a monthly basis taxes that are owed. I just think its way too much. Living in a povery city and number one in all other bad areas is simply too much for the majority of the citizens here. We have elected officials that owe as much as 30k in back taxes and no forcloseure, that is a better argument why don't you attact that?
Why is the reason to charge that much just to pay back the taxes? Its because they know most people can't pay that large amount, so they loose their home, and guess who buys it? The people that set up that requiremtnt. ATTACK THE ONE also.

Or you are part of the system and you are defending it!
