AT 101, HELENA CLARK, WW II U.S. ARMY NURSE, PASSES ON

Special to El Rrun-Rrun

A U.S. Army nurse who served in World War II died Monday in Pontiac Michigan.

Her niece, Kathey Hornbeck – who has affectionately nicknamed her aunt “Saint Helen.” – said she was 101 and was born on August 1920.

(She was related to Lindsay Clark, son of Kitty, the owner of Southwinds Lounge. She is not Kitty's sister Helen.)

The Pontiac native graduated from the Mercy School of Nursing in Detroit in 1943, and, the following year, joined the U.S. Army Air Corps as a nurse.

“She was stationed in Florida, South Carolina, Texas, Utah, then on to the 121st General Hospital in India and China, Shanghai and Singapore. She served her tour of duty until 1947,” said Hornbeck..

May Helena rest in peace as we pay back the peace that she fought for in order for us to have our rights and freedoms. Women like her were few in those times and having a relative who was also in the Navy during WWII helps me understand the greatness of these ladies. May she continue to guard the gates to heaven and patrol the golden streets.
