EL RANCHITO JUDGE JUAN JOSE MARTINEZ PASSES AWAY AT 77

Special to El Rrun-Rrun

(Ed.'s Note: We still remember judge Martinez telling the parents of juvenile court defendants to keep their kids away from "pelones y peludos" so they wouldn't get in trouble. We first met JJ –as he hated being called because his name, he reminded us, was Juan Jose – when he helped veterans get jobs at Texas Southmost College and leading the protest so they could open up the indigent cemetery at San Pedro, not far from E Ranchito where he lived, to the poor. He will be missed.)

Judge Juan Jose “J.J.” Martinez passed away on Saturday, April 16, 2022 at his home in his sleep surrounded by his beloved wife and children.

Born in 1945, he was 77 years old. He graduated from Texas A and I University in Kingsville, TX in 1968 with a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology and Psychology and in 1970 with a Master of Arts in Psychology, Counseling and Education.

In 1978, he earned his Doctor of Philosophy from the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, NM and ultimately, his Doctor of Jurisprudence in 1982.

He was appointed in 1997 as the first full time Juvenile Judge for Cameron County and in 1999 as Associate Judge for Cameron County Family Court by legendary judge Darrell Hester, with whom he struck a lifetime friendship.

He was a teacher, an educator, a Judge and a licensed attorney serving the State of Texas for almost 30 years.

He was a strong advocate for Chicano rights and the poor, and a champion of the people. As a juvenile judge, rather than to punish young offenders, he urged and inspired challenged, at-risk youth with his philosophy and protocol of prevention, intervention, rehabilitation and education so they could prosper to become positive contributors to society.

A legend in the Cameron County Courthouse, his stories continue to be shared throughout its sacred halls to this day.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Juan Balli Martinez and Consuelo Nunez Martinez, his brothers, Orencio Martinez, Daniel Martinez and his oldest daughter Lynda Martinez. He is survived by his beloved wife of 55 years, Gabriela Carlos Martinez, and his children, Juan Jose Martinez, Jr., Belinda Martinez Garcia (Eloy Garcia), Laura Martinez Barbosa (Alberto Barbosa), Dr. Juan Diego Martinez (Dr. Milagros Martinez), Consuelito Martinez and Luiz Gabriel Martinez and his grandsons, Joaquin, Noah and Benjamin Martinez, Valeriano Jose Barbosa and his granddaughter, Gabriela Cristina Barbosa.

He is also survived by his sisters, (his twin) Maria Gloria Cuellar (Raul Cuellar), Sulema Valenzia, Olivia Rodriguez and Donna “Petra” Casares.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, April 21, 2022 from 4:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. with a Memorial Service at 6:00 p.m. at Thomae-Garza Funeral Home in San Benito, Texas. Cremation will follow in accordance to his wishes.

Rest in peace Juan Jose, and peace be with you and yours.

Why Pregnant Texans Are Heading to Mexico for Abortions

DESPERATE TIMES, DESPERATE MEASURES

Just as Texas has tightened its laws surrounding abortion, Mexico has gone the opposite direction, compelling people to seek potentially less safe procedures south of the border.

(Bad times for wild fucking)

Texas Republican US Sen. TED CRUZ WARNS DISNEY PROGRAMMING WILL SOON DEPICT MICKEY AND PLUTO FUCKING

The senator from Texas thinks the company’s opposition to Florida’s “Don’t Say Gay” law means it’s going to introduce X-rated content featuring animated characters “going at it.”

(republicans are evil and anti-America)

Why no indictment of Donald Trump yet:

Holding the threat of prosecution over Trump’s head in the hopes that he doesn’t run for office. The implication of this move is that if he decides to go forward with a 2024 candidacy, then he will face prosecution, and if he doesn’t, then he won’t.

Guess here: Cheeto will fold.

He was the epitome of the term “a gentleman and a scholar.” He left an indelible mark on the Cameron County Courthouse and Bar.

Learning about ancient toilets today. It really makes you appreciate modern plumbing.

I hear they still use outhouses in Las Prietas. Sad.

Once more with COVID19, Americans go it alone -

Too many times during the coronavirus pandemic, Americans have been left on their own to decide how best to protect themselves and their families. Instead of acting collectively, people go it alone.

The most recent blow to an intervention proven to slow the spread of the coronavirus is the decision by a Trump-appointed federal judge in Florida to strike down a mandate that individuals wear masks on public transportation — trains, planes, buses and the like. The judge ruled the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention exceeded its statutory authority in mandating masks in public transit.

Airlines were so happy to see the mandate removed that passengers were told of the ruling midflight. Many cheered and ripped off the masks in joy.

The judge was appointed by then-President Donald Trump in September 2020. Nominated at 33, the American Bar Association said Judge Kathryn Kimball Mizelle lacked the requisite legal experience to serve on the federal bench. She had been a lawyer for eight years and never tried a case. Now, she will decide issues that affect the lives of all Americans for decades.
