Many vets and their supporters said it was one of the best attended Silent March events in recent memory. Mayor Trey Mendez and commissioners Roy De Los Santos and Rose Gowen represented the city and Cameron County Judge Eddie Trevino and BISD board member Eddie Garcia were in attendance as well as some Congressional candidates like Dan Sanchez and Mayra Flores without her AR-15.
The march happens every year.
But what didn't happen this year was the annual 21-gun salute ceremony held by the The American Vietnam Veterans Chapter 1 of Brownsville at its 37th annual Memorial Day services in front of the Hanna High School plaque with the names of 28 Brownsville men who were killed in the Vietnam War, including Missing In Action James Albert Champion. His status has since been changed to Killed In Action.
Likewise, the 21-gun salute at Veterans Park was not performed by the Vietnam veterans either.
"We decided not to have the 21-gun salute because of the shootings of the 19 kids and two teachers in Uvalde," said Sal Salinas, Vietnam Veteran commander. "It's coincidental that there were 21 victims like the 21-gun salute. We decided not to do it here or at the park out of respect for them."
In a short speech at the park, Salinas instead called for 21 seconds of silence in memory of the school shooting victims.)

It's a shame to have a bias, hateful writer of this article to say a thing about Mrs Flores and the AR15. Maybe this writer must be a Saint and can be the first person to throw stones at everyone? Next time look in the mirror stupid before you you start throwing or better yet, shooting off your mouth.
Dan Sanchez, who is looking for that elected position that carries the same weight he does and all of a sudden is very patriotic? Only because, his opponet, Mayra Flores critiqued him. The rumor is that he is also neglecting his clients since he is putting all his efforts into this campaign, and for a six month stint. I wonder if Brownsville will vote for him now? My guess, is of course? Democrats voting democrat since they cannot use or exercise their right to vote for others, who they should know will do a better job?
