PAREDES UNDER LOCKDOWN; SUSPECT W-GUN IN CUSTODY

Special to El Rrun-Rrun

The Brownsville Independent School District ordered a lockdown of Americo Paredes Elementary School this afternoon when a road-rage incident that happened down the street in front of the IDEA school spilled over into the school's parking lot at 3700 Heritage Trail.

BISD officials say that they had lifted the lockdown after they arrested one of the suspects who was in possession of a gun in the school's parking lot.

"We have a suspect in custody and he had a weapon in his possession," confirmed BISD board president Eddie Garcia, "but the campus is still on lockdown (at about 5:10 p.m.) until we get a clearance from our police. At no time were any of our children in danger. All contact took place outside the school in the parking lot."

At about 3 p.m. a BISD post revealed Paredes Elementary went into lockdown due to “suspicious activity.”

Police responded to the parking lot of the elementary where they made contact with a man who possessed a firearm.

The district issued a release, stating the man was detained and removed from the premises.

Garica said that the BISD police arrested the suspect "within minutes" of getting the call. The suspect is being processed by district police, he said.

He said more information will be given to the pubic as it becomes available.

Kudos for Chief Oscar Garcia, BISD, and his well-trained officers. I do hope that their training includes staying of their cell phones on personal calls or 3 or 4 of them congregating to talk instead of separately patrolling the campus. We can only get better, Chief!

What is the latest on the Gallegos fiasco? Did they slap him on his hand and sent him home to Papa, or what gives? Herald seems to have placed a blinded eye on this issue. Juan, we depend on your reports.
