Work Session presentation from the Mitte Foundation (Mitte Foundation/City Manager's Office)
Since this past February, local resident and businesswoman Ashley Beane Alshaer has addressed the City of Brownsville Commission through the public comment period and through emails where she charges that she has been targeted by the Mitte Foundation, the Brownsville Children's Museum, Mayor Trey Mendez and commissioner Roy De Los Santos.
Tonight, during a work session during the regular commission meeting, an attorney for the Mitte Foundation will address some of the misconceptions of the relationship between the foundation and the city, and to address her allegations, which De los Santos has called "slander and libel."
De Los Santos said Alshaer has also filed ethics complaints against him and Mendez with the City Ethics Commission, one of which has already been dismissed.
Alshaer first addressed the commission February 28 and then again August 16 with her charges and sent a detailed email to the city where she outlined her complaints. The contents of that email were not made available to the public and she declined to state her allegations during the August 16 meeting.
But she asked that the city stop funding Mitte and a slew of other nonprofits through the Hotel Occupancy Tax (HOT), putting their funding in danger.
The work session begins at 5 p.m. at City Hall, 1001 E Elizabeth St.
