Back in April 20, 2019 we came upon a framed print of a Edward Streichen photograph at a garage sale which indicated it was originally acquired from the Department of Photographs of the New York Museum of Modern Art (MOMA). Its name is the Flatiron Building, in New York.
The print is approximately 21" X 25" and a label in the back indicates it was framed and sold at a place called the Shoestring Gallery with a Coria Street address in Brownsville, Texas. We looked it up and found that the business had closed, and that the owner/curator was one Betty Garnett.
We tried, without success, to contact Ms. Garnett. It's really a singular work by a famous artist/photographer so we threw our piece of bread upon the cyberwatwers and asked our readers:
"Does anyone know whether Ms. Garnett, or any of her descendants, are still living in the city? If you do, send us a phone number where we might reach them or give them our email address: rrunrrun@gmail.com."
On Friday, October 14, 2022 we received this email:
"My name is Nancy Jones, a friend sent me an article asking for information on Betty Garnett, she was my Mother. What info are you looking for? Thank you, Nancy Jones."Well, you can imagine how surprised and tickled pink we were to get a response to our two-year-old query and responded:
"We had acquired a framed print of a famous building in New York that was framed by the Shoestring Gallery in Brownsville, Texas. We just wondered when it was in operation and whether Betty Garnett was still living in Brownsville. If she has passed, our condolences. You might be pleased to hear that the framed print of the painting is now hanging in a local attorney's office, a statement on the good work your mother performed. Thanks for getting in touch with us."
Ms. Jones responded:"Thank you, that is good to know, she was so good at framing. We were very proud of her and my father! They have both passed (Ed.'s Note: Betty in 2001, and husband Walter Scott Garnett in 2002) but it is nice to know some of their work is still being enjoyed!
Thank you, Nancy Jones"

We have two posters framed by Mrs. Garnett over 30 years ago. I loved going to her gallery. Such a calming, peaceful place. Our posters still look as good as they did the day we brought them home.
