The IRS rules for non-profit organizations under IRS section 501 ( C) (3), state “organizations are prohibited from directly or indirectly participating in or intervening in, any political campaign on behalf of or any candidate for elective public office.”
However, Congresswoman Mayra Flores TX-34 was recently interviewed by Paola Ramos on MSNBC and in the interview, her pastor, Luis Cabrera, takes credit for starting the Make America Godly Again movement which she runs her platform on.
In fact, both said that her campaign is run out of Cabrera's church. (See graphics at right.)
Flores' financial report for the first quarter states she pays Cabrera monthly rent of $1,000 for the church’s address of 205 South Gate Dr. Suite 1 Harlingen, TX 78552.
A search of the the church’s address under property taxes in Cameron County Appraisal District states that the owner of the building is a company called ABW IT OF 2021 INC., owned by Ms. Geeta Wadhwani from Brownsville, Texas, which has multiple properties listed under its name.
The Texas Penal Code 91.005 states that, “you may not rent the property without your landlord’s consent.”
The City Church Harlingen’s website shows nothing but voting and even has a donate button to Make America Godly Again. Then, under tithings it has a cash app for donations for City Church Harlingen.
The church's Facebook page states that City Church Harlingen is a non-for-profit organization. But a search of the organizations registered under the IRS tax-exempt status does not list City Church Harlingen.
In fact, all his businesses – Make America Godly Again, Prayer Train, City Church Harlingen, and Freedom Store – were not registered under tax exempt status.
A search of the Cameron County Clerk’s registered assumed names (DBAs) lists his wife, Crystal Cabrera, registered the name City Church Harlingen back on June 11, 2018. However, she did not register it under the IRS tax exemptions. It is unknown if his organizations are registered for-profit businesses. They are also not listed under the Texas Comptroller as for-profit businesses.
