(Ed.'s Note: One of our seven readers sent us this photo of railroad tracks visible under the asphalt emerging from the alley and crossing E. 4th Street to emerge on the other side between Fronton - now named after a local family - and St. Frances Street. Does anyone know where this line ran to and from? Did it come from the bridge to the Union Pacific train station on Madison, maybe? Please enlighten us if you know.)

It went to the area where the el jardin is at there was a train station there before el jardin was build. I remember cause we took my older brother there after he came from training from the military. You walked down several steps and into the station.. This was before the korean war.

It didn't go to the El Jardin site. El Jardin was built in the late 1920's. Anyone saying they went there before El Jardin was built (and remembers doing so) would be at least 100 years old. Not impossible, but very unlikely.

All I see here is a dirty alley in a dirty city. Is this what we pay taxes for?
What I see is a poor neighborhood where people have struggled to pay their PUB bill and don't have enough for up keep of their homes. El Papa del Padrecito and all of his theiving friends do not live in that barrio.
TAXES are for bike trails (only) don't forget that.
It was the Missouri Pacific Railway Station and yes El Jardin was there and levee street was a dirt street and it was about 1950 more or less. There are postcards and pictues of the rail station so it did exist and no I am not 100 years old, not yet anyway.
And there was also the depot station/Railroad Park on 7th street where the BPD is at or around that area. The buildings (some) are still there. The name might be different.

El Jardin was built closer to 11th and Levee and the Union Pacific was off
12th street where the empty Ross is located and the old Trailway station was.
I am not 100 years old and I remember going there when I was a kid. My Dad worked for the Port of Brownsville and their office was located in the same area. The Southern Pacific was on 6th and 7th Madison, so the closest railroad was that one. I also remember the trains at La Fronton where as kids we would go get pineapples they brought on the train and unload them in the area and would give us the ones that did not make the throw-trip from the trains to the truck. The whole neighbor gang would go over there on Sat morning to go get our free pineapples - as many as we could carry. I was smart cause I took my little red wagon and pulled it behind my big red 3 wheel tricycle so I could bring more home! What fun days! That is why I truly like to look at these kind of pictures and questions because it brings back a time when we were "pobres pero contentos" and kids could run around town doing exciting things without getting into trouble. Can you imagine that now?
Sanborn maps Juan - they tell a lot. Not worth the effort for me but there's a clue for someone who wants to really know. Finding the maps online for free may be a challenge but not entirely impossible as some sections of downtown have been digitized and made available to public.
Ah I remember the pineapples on fronton st. we all went there on our bikes with a basket on the bars, also by cummings for tomatos and la iglesia catolica on lincoln for other stuff like vegetables, and cops like R Garcia and Miller would follow us around but kept quiet.
