A BLAST FROM THE PAST: AHUMADA REMINDS THE VOTERS

 By Pat Ahumada

Special to El Rrun-Rrun

Dear Editor,
The Tenaska project produced high utility rates and made a lot of people richer, but we got nothing in return.

When I was mayor, I opposed this 800-megawatt Tenaska/PUB power plant proposed project, because we did not need it. This proposal was for Tenaska’s benefit, not ours. The proposal was 200 Megawatts for PUB and 600 for Tenaska with PUB ratepayers were guaranteeing the financing.

I also opposed the $2.3 million downtown real estate purchase, because it was only worth $600,000 and we had no need for it. In my first term as mayor, I was against and the only to vote against the 84-acre give away to TSC to build the university buildings, which then UTB sold back to TSC when it dissolved.

I was instrumental in exposing the $91 million PUB subsidies for land developer’s, which forced a more equitable impact fee that led to lowering utility rates, which was a huge win for ratepayers.

I was the only one who opposed the Carlos Marin Imagine Brownsville scam, which cost taxpayers $850,000, plus an annual fee for years and it too failed, with no benefit for taxpayers. What a scam!

After I left the mayorship, I opposed the 285-acre land purchase without water rights for another $2.3 million, which was worth $380,000 and we did not need. Early this year, I heard of another potential scam to develop a 700-acre industrial park, which prompted me to advise our mayor against this project, because again I see a potential scam for taxpayers to be burden with.

The Tenaska/PUB 800-megawatt power plant scam has come to light, which has again proved PUB cannot manage itself! This leads me to recommend a charter change to create an autonomous Utility Board that will take city politics out of management and would lower utility rates.

The $23 million Bridge to Nowhere scam, the Tenaska project, and all the other scams have proved to hurt taxpayers, because there lacks leadership, transparency, accountability and failure to elect people who seek office to serve, not to be served.

The gates for Special Interest were open when Tony Martinez was elected, which led to the over-priced real estate purchases and Tenaska/PUB scam breaking ground in early 2013. This prompted me to request information under the Open Records Act in December 2013, but was denied. Subsequently, knowing this was a scam, I followed up with similar requests in 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017, but was repeatedly denied.

But, like all Pyramid schemes and the $23 million bridge to nowhere, the perpetrators get richer at others expense.

Millions were spent on the Tenaska project, with $29 million remaining, which in my humble opinion we should hold Tenaska accountable. They knew or should have known this project was not feasible and they continued to perpetrate the scam with PUB. This is why my Open Records requests were repeatedly denied.

Recently the commission/PUB voted to forgive late penalties and to stop disconnections, which is a way for the PUB Board and City Commission to seek absolution from the rate payers, hoping they will forget that this scam happened on their watch. It is their hope voters will reward them again to keep the status quo.

PUB has proven it cannot be managed itself responsible because of the politics. PUB should publish how who benefitted from the scam and all should be barred from doing business with PUB/City for 5 to 10 years. That is called, ACCOUNTABILITY! The City/PUB has failed its’ fiduciary duty and will continue to fail, because it lacks true leadership! True leaders will put the city before themselves, others always look for an angle to gain from there position. Hopefully, this next May election voters can put aside their emotions and not be easily pandered to voting for the same elite self-serving people who seek office for all the wrong reasons.

Do not forget they voted to raise your utility rates and you got scammed! We need to .elect people who will put our city First! We must take our city back from special interest in order to restore transparency, accountability, cut a lot of ongoing waste, increase revenues, reduce the tax rate and utilities and do capital improvements.

Paving our streets needs to be a priority, hiring more police officers, and improve the permitting department. Some people are forced to wait 8 months or longer for permits, which is unacceptable! Imagine paying rent and waiting for a permit 8 months, this is a recipe for failure for small business growth and we must improve code enforcement to help businesses comply with minimal bureaucracy.

It is time to put forth a plan to make Brownsville a “no kill’ city over a five-year period, because there is no justification in slaughtering 6,000 +/- pets annually.

These elected officials do not care how many we slaughter, which says a lot about them, but I do! Hopefully you too and this time you will make it an issue to bring change.

We must bring international flights to Brownsville and build the weir to make us drought resilient. We must restore access to city government and make sure we do not get scammed again by special interest with grandeur pandering. This coming city election in May 2023, you the voter will have a choice! You can vote these people out of office or continue to reward incompetence.

If you vote for the same people who voted to raise your rates, then do not complain! Special interest will be supporting these people, but you have to see through their false narratives and pandering for better governance. We must take our city back and focus on our needs and priorities.

Mr. Ahumada is absolutely right. We need to stop electing people who are only interested on getting rich at taxpayers expense. Casa del Nylon purchase was a scam, that ratnest was not worth $2.3 millions and that's not including the other couple of millions the city is currently spending renovating it. Besides, it sat empty for over a decade. El Cueto purchase was another scam and the list can go on and on. Pura pinche rata de dos patas en Brownsville politics. Seems it will never end.

Pat Ahumada had very good ideas, but many people were jealous of him and they wanted to destroy him.

Unlike Juan "El Tri" Mendez, former Mayor Pat Ahumada is of average male height.

Short people like El Tri cannot be trusted. It's also why Carlos Cascos lost the recent county judge's race.

facts.

Anonymous said...

Es todo! SO you running Pat? You got my vote!

Anonymous said...

Pat Ahumada was never appreciated, for his desire to serve, nor for his acute politics. Mendez and Tony Martinez were play-acting at the job, Mendez to compensate for his lack of height and Martinez to feed his bank account.

Pat Ahumada was Juan Montoya was Ben Neece was Roy De Los Santos was the Everyman in Brownsville.

He should stage a political comeback, yes.

Damn when did he become the voice of reason

Mr. Ahumada, this looks good on paper and it does address issues that the people of Brownsville have been putting up with until now. However, I seem to remember that somewhere in this story that was also a check that was cashed when the money did not belong to the person who cashed it.

If I decide to vote for you, if you run, how can this be explained to me as being something that did not effect us personally?

You do have some good outlooks but there is still not enough trust on any
politician in Brownsville, Texas.

People need to be prosecuted for crimes committed at PUB the proof is in the audit it's very clear. The city commission is ultimately responsible for the idiots on the PUB board and what happened there. If they do not push for a criminal investigation then they are complicit in this fraud and cover up. These greedy ass people still walk around as if it was no big deal stealing from the poor and elderly and they know who they are we see YOU. Remember dummies you can't take your money with you when you die you'll definitely be judged on what you pretended not to know but new all along.

If Pat throws his hat in the ring he has my vote!!

Anonymous said...

Ahumada at least showed he wanted to serve Brownsville and the people. Mendez served himself and Tony Martinez was simply playing at it.

Maybe Pat is not the long-term answer, but, then again, perhaps he is...

you think?

Is Victor, aka "Mr. Popularity", also a general as he has an "army of supporters?" Next, will they be storming the BISD building? Some people are claiming that Myra is Victor's chief consultant and leader of his army.

Why is trey not running? That deserves an answer. I know ahumada was crooked, just not as crooked as the Tony martinez and trevino, or trey. But he has my vote simply on the no kill shelter.

Mr. Ahumada should run for mayor .

If indeed you choose to undertake the task of ironing out all these wrinkles of wrongs, then you will need a very hot iron. I wish you luck in your endeavor!

Being that I have never never indoctrinated by the democratic party, if a Republican isn’t running for mayor I’m staying home. Not worth the cost of my fuel or time. It was democratic politicians that stole from the citizens of Brownsville and its Democratic politicians that have been ruining our country. I’ll just wait until there is complete destruction of both. It’s easier to rebuild than to remodel.

Ahumada has been here and there for many years… he has a strong point. Let’s hope it’s not a rant!

If he runs for mayor he will get my vote, if he doesn’t Brownsville needs someone willing to voice out these issues and make good on correcting the current leadership’s mistakes.

The reality is that everyone that is there for over 2 years is TRASH… no real interest in the community and they have been aware of all of these scams without any change. It’s hard to believe that someone who wasn’t protecting special Interests would be alarmed with what has been going on.

This next election is make or break … no more pet projects for Rose Gowen, no more scam deals with cowen, galonski, tetrau , no more lame followers like Munguia , Cardenas and enough of the rat lawyers wanting an ego boost running for mayor without a clue on how to be a leader.

Why are the st Joseph ex alum in control of the city? Look what has become of the decency and pride Brownsville once had!

C L E A N. S W E E P !

NO MORE OF THE SAME TRASH

Pat Ahumada was the poor man's Trump. He knew a scam when he saw it, and called the ole politicos who were out for themselves out on it.
They knew alcohol was his weakness, and they burned him good...making sure he got caught for dwis, and false check cashing. Didn't they do something similar to Erasmo??? They knew both of these guys were exposing them so they followed them probably bought them a drink and set them up good. Funny how people in politics are all related somehow, and mostly come from so called well to do families/educations. When some poor barrio boy/girl with a local college degree and good intentions tries to run they find ways to make sure they don't get the votes and if by chance they do win it's only for one term if they are lucky to complete it without getting arrested first. Awwww politics, what a dirty game we play

Anonymous said...

One letter full of problems that he identified (with no solution) and he has yall by the balls.... As a concerned citizen, I would rather wait to see all candidates come forth, see them debate, and then ask them for a thorough plan as to what actions they would like make to bring transparency, improvement, and growth. It is at that point I would formulate my vote. One simple letter on what "I" did versus what "they" did is not going to buy me. Maybe if this letter came with a burnt chicken plate he might of had my vote but it didnt. Toodles!!

What a fucking shame.... you all fucking discuss us, but someone has to be put there.

What mostly stands out to me about Pat was "la comedia" that he created. Remember when some woman wrote on Facebook something about him or her being the "better half" and then Ahumada being the "gentlemen" that he is publicly set her straight. His personal behavior always made me laugh.
