ON DAY DE LA VIRGEN DE GUADALUPE, A&M, TSC SIGN MOU

 Special to El Rrun-Rrun

4. Consideration and possible action on approval of Memorandum of Understanding and Certificate between Texas Southmost College and Texas A&M Engineering Experiment Station (TEES)

It has taken months – perhaps going on a year – but the efforts of local community colleges, vocational schools, and the University of Texas A & M will reach a successful conclusion next Monday, Dec. 12, when the board of the Texas Southmost College and the Texas A&M Engineering Experiment Station (TEES) approve and sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to join in efforts to train the local workforce during a specially-called meeting.

A&M recently inked MOUs with the Brownsville Independent School District and the Los Fresnos CISD, Texas State Technical College, and Point Isabel CISD at a ceremony at the Port of Brownsville.

The meeting and signing of the A&M-TSC MOU will be held at noon Monday at the Gorgas Board Room at Texas Southmost College, 80 Fort Brown, Brownsville, Texas.

The joining of the efforts of both institutions is hailed as a watershed event to raise the proficiency and skills level of the local workforce by TSC board president Adela Garza, who said the beneficiaries would be the students, community and manufacturing base of the Lower Rio Grande Valley.

"We are committed to work for the students and our community," Garza said of the A&M-TSC MOU. "TSC has been in the forefront acquiring the facilities and training for them and – with the fine leadership of Brownsville's Mike Hernandez as a regent on the A&M board and Chancellor John Sharp – we see this collaboration with A&M as a continuation of this commitment."

"This initiative includes ISDs (BISD included) and the three community colleges offering technical educational pathways starting in seventh grade all the way up to Ph.D.s in engineering," Hernandez said. " The Rio Grande Valley will have the best trained workforce in the country. After our MOUs, it’s up to the Economic Development Councils and the Port of Brownsville to recruit the manufacturers."

Following the signing, the college will host a lunch and then a tour of the TSC vocational-technical facilities available to students across the South Texas area.

If it's taken months for this, there is no "perhaps" on it going on a year, Montoya.

Your understanding of English is so limited.

The usual "victim" comments from the bitter uneducated people that bring down Brownsville. This A&M and TSC program is going to bring great opportunities and results for our young people so that they can be successful in their future. As for the negative idiots posting negative thoughts, continue your shitty life.

I think @8:27 is right.

HEY, BROWNSVILLE -

A handful of U.S. public transit systems have recently made or are poised to make bus travel free, in hopes of better serving riders and addressing critical equity issues.

Such programs have been hugely popular, leaving transit officials scrambling to find ways to keep funding them.

Buses tend to serve lower-income and minority riders, meaning free service keeps more money in the pockets of people with the greatest need.

Free service also eliminates fare evasion and its related enforcement, which is costly in and of itself — and also tends to mostly affect the people least able to pay fines.

Plus, a healthy, well-used public transit system can be the beating heart of a city's economy, even if it's not itself a big moneymaker.

GOOD IDEA!
Cost more to collect bus fees and process exemptions, not to mention "shrinkage".
Just let everyone ride FREE.

Free city bus service?

Great idea! Do for the people, COB!!

This is good for community—if we can recruit manufacturers that pay decent wages.

Good job TSC!

Ask for the number of people going through the Workforce Training department at TSC. You will see that TSC doesn't know diddly squat about workforce training, other than the Police Academy, which was there way back since the early UTB days. There really isn't much going on. No one wants to sign agreements with TSC because they don't trust TSC to come through with good training. That's why TSC is going out and signing MOU's with other institutions that are capable of giving these trainings. Otherwise, TSC would already be doing it without the help of universities. TSC will do the paperwork while A&M will get the credit for giving the classes. TSC will be their secretary. Ask for a copy of the agreement. I'm tired of seeing these power hungry board members and idiot president waste our tax money. Get rid of them all and start over.
