Despite claims by some well-known politicians that they will run for mayor or for the other three open positions on the City of Brownsville commission, so far only one has put his John Hancock on the dotted line to replace outgoing mayor Trey Mendez.
Castro cited an "alleged Class B misdemeanor charge" as the reason for his resignation from the BISD in 2020.
"This is my last race," Castro said. "I'm going to finish my cycle an call it quits after this one."
Just recently, a social media post stated that Mitte Cultural District Marketing and Membership Director Bryan Martinez had picked up his Candidate Paper Packet and was seriously considering filing for the District 1 position now occupied by Nurith Galonsky. Galonsky has not said one way or the other whether she will run for reelection to District 1 or whether she will instead jump into the mayoral race fray.
Galonsky's term ends May 2023, as does District 2 commissioner's Jessica Tetreau, who cannot run for commissioner due to a city charter election which passed term limits and limited individuals to two terms as commissioner or as mayor.
There have been some social media noises that Tetreau will run for mayor, something permitted by the city charter. Current mayor Trey Mendez has announced he will nor be running for reelection. His term also expires this May 2023.
Aside from the mayor and District 1 and District 2, the At-Large A position now held by John Cowen for one term also expires in May. Cowen, seen as a potential candidate for mayor, has not announced whether he will run for reelection or also jump into the mayoral race. If he opts to run for mayor, the At-Large A position will open up for contenders.
There has also been some noise in some quarters that former mayor Pat Ahumada is putting together a slate to run in May, but so far this has not materialized. And even if he decides to file, there is sure to be a challenge to his candidacy, again, based on the city charter section on term limits since Ahumada has served twice as mayor in the past. The alleged Ahumada election slate has not been revealed.

****Regardless of what you think of this man or his co-host's, at least they question or speak out at city and PUB meetings. Are you OK that PUB took our money for years when their goal deflated and they continued to still steal from us or do you have a different utility company? When can someone offer solutions when our own elected officials will not listen and they turn the other way. When can a private person offer solutions when a present commissioner nominated someone to oversee PUB and is associated with a former primary member who is responsible for the PUB mess.***.
