A MOTHER'S LOVE FOR HER KIDS EXTENDS BEYOND THE GRAVE

 By Juan Montoya

Many lifetimes ago I used to work for a county commissioner from the barrio.

Among some of the duties I was asked to perform was community outreach, although we never really gave it a title. When someone got hospitalized, jailed, etc., this particular commissioner made sure that they knew we would do whatever was in our power to to assist the families.

Once in a while we attended funerals, and although it was not considered a part of our political tasks, it melded in with the rest of our work.

On this particular day, the matriarch of a large Southmost barrio family died suddenly after a short illness. My boss knew the family well and had grown up with them and considered them his friends.

He asked if I wanted to accompany him to the rosary (el rosarrio). I am no fan of funerals, but I tagged along dutifully to keep him company.

The rosary was being held at the TreviƱo Funeral Home on Old Port Isabel Road. When we got there, the parking lot was nearly full almost all the way to the resaca bordering it on the south side.

Her many sons and daughters, nieces, grandchildren and even great-grandchildren were there. Some of the kids were munching on pan dulce. Some adults sitting in the lobby were drinking coffee and talking about the deceased.

We walked in through the back entrance and greeted some of the people in the lobby before the rosary started. My boss noticed his friends outside the front door and we made our way there through the people. Some men were huddled outside and talking softly among themselves as they tend to do on serious and somber occasions.

We said hello and the oldest son went on to tell us how his mother had taken suddenly ill and within a day or two had died in her sleep. We commiserated with him and his brothers and then my boss asked: "Does your brother in El Paso know she died?"

At that question, his friend looked at him queerly and motioned us to step aside of the larger group.
His brother wasn't really in El Paso, but rather, serving time for a minor drug conviction at the La Tuna Federal Penitentiary, about 12 miles north of the city limits of El Paso on the Texas-New Mexico border.

"I called the prison the day after my mother died and they told me it would be impossible for him to attend her funeral," he said. "But they said that since it was a serious matter they would allow me to speak to him and give him the news.

"When he came on the line I told him I had some bad news.
"Es de la jefa, verdad (It's about Mom, isn't it)?,' he said his brother asked. "Se murio, verdad? (She died, didn't she)?"
"How did you know," the brother asked.
"Hace dos dias vino a despedirse de mi en la noche(Two nights ago she came to say goodbye)," the brother answered. "Ya sabia, carnal (I already knew, bro)."

A chill went down my spine when I heard that, and shortly thereafter we left.
There are a few lessons I have learned over my nearly seven decades on earth, and this is one of them: A mother's love never ends, and not even the grave can stop it.

Lover her if she's still here, and treasure her memory if you've lost her. But her love is never ending.

Maudlin self-pity there, Montoya.

But we grant you the moment to savor, although we know your jefita is still alive.

People die every day, and, yes, we can frame each story as if unique.

But they're not.

They're not. Fact.

What a beautiful but poignant vignette,Toya. Sad because people from the "barrio" always find themselves in "la pienta." I love the words "matriarch, and pan dulce." It is our beautiful culture. When women are the matriarchs they have to be fucking strong. Most matriarchs are successful in teaching their sons to respect women and to be strong manly men. At least that is what the women in my family did and they had husbands too. The husbands weren't cowards either. Te aventastes con to writing.

The only women who abandon their children tend to have a mental illness.

To all the sour pusses fuck off! You know what no don't fuck off waddle in your puddle of jealousy then eat shit and die.

I tend to believe, smartly not spiritually, that there is no afterlife, as we are merely biological.

Like animals and plants, we live and then we die.

No one gets more years simply because they believe in a God.

But you know that, Montoya.

Am sure you do.

Why don't you ever mention the county commissioner your worked for by name?

Ashamed?

Lucino Rosenbaum was his name - in case you've forgotten.

(Not that Lucino was a model public servant)

Juan, When I was ill with Covid last July, I was alone laying in bed enduring the Covid symptoms. I was in and out of consciousness on one of the worst days. My deceased Grandmother sat at the foot of my bed. I firmly believe that she was watching over me. It gave me solace and peace. My Mama will always be with me.

I have a wrist that was injured when my mother struck me with a broomstick as a child. She said that she wished I had died of the tetanus infection I had survived after birth. Sometimes in our culture, women are forced to give birth to children they don't want or love. I wish I could relate to your post. I don't hate my mother, but I do feel sorry for her experience. I have chosen to never have any children. The cycle stops here.

For a tough-talking border dude, Brown Blogger Montoya is an overly sentimental dude.

But that's the Mexican fatalismo - always there to bring defeat, tears and pain.

yes, it is.

It's impressive how Brownsville is similar to some Mexican cities, in many ways! Saludos desde Reynosa, MX!

I have been highly considering leaving the states. I’m sick and tired of all the divisiveness and politics that are making life harder in america. I’m working two jobs to live paycheck to paycheck. Paying an insane amount on healthcare, and living in fear that I may get shot. Living in America now is no way to live. The amount of homeless people in my neighborhood has increased dramatically and most of these people are homeless simply because life got too expensive or have a health condition that deemed them disabled. It’s just sad all around.

The U.S. is dying.

After my dad was sent back to Mexico after spending most his life in South Texas, I went down to see him and this is one of the days he told me he really liked, Mother's Day. We rode beside the beach with the windows down. This day always takes me back to that moment. Rip Dad
