BOARD BANS BI-NATIONAL SASH, GRAD WEARS IT ANYWAY

PARACHUTE, Colo. (AP) — A Colorado student barred from wearing a sash representing the flags of Mexico and the United States to her high school graduation did so anyway, partially covering it with another sash representing her participation in a service organization.

“Always stand up for what you believe in,” Grand Valley High School graduate Naomi Peña Villasano told the Post Independent of Glenwood Springs, Colorado, after receiving her diploma on Saturday in the west-central Colorado town of Parachute.

Peña Villasano’s case is the latest dispute in the U.S. about what kind of cultural graduation attire is allowed at commencement ceremonies.

Peña Villasano challenged school officials in court after they said she would be banned from graduation ceremonies if she wore the sash that has stars and stripes on one side and a cactus, eagle and a serpent to represent the Mexican flag on the other side.

The courts ruled in favor of the school district, saying it could manage how a graduation was conducted.

HOW TO SAVE THE ENVIRONMENT -

1.) tax people according to size of their nostrils

- There are many, many fat people in Brownsville. All of them have big, wide noses capable of inhaling much more oxygen than a trim, in-shape resident.

- It's our air. Let's care for it by taxing abusers!

The saying goes: monkey see monkey do. I may be mistaken but back in the day(70s 80s) I don’t recall any issues during commencements of this nature. It was simple cap/ gown, those yellow tassels ( honors student) and maybe a national honor society sash. That was it!! that was all that was needed. The sole and most important reasons were to graduate and receive your diploma!!! That was the goal. Something to be proud of for you and your family!! Your heritage and your roots is something you should showcase/demonstrate and be proud of all your life. But all it took was some dude in Arizona ( i think) that first tried to do this . It was more like a gimmick move than anything else. And all of a sudden this “ controversy “ began. Yes we do live in the land of the free but theirs also traditions, rules and etiquette to follow and that exist. I myself am extremely proud of my Hispanic heritage but i also believe in following the rules. But nowadays it seems like the more waves and controversy you cause the more excitement it brings. Quick example: some of these kids with the Mexican flag symbol can’t even speak spanish, they have no idea of the old Mexican traditions, don’t know what part of Mexico their ancestors came from, they have no respect for their elders, most have never been to Mexico to visit their relatives,ETC. They assume that just by wearing that sash they will make a statement. In my opinion they are missing the point— they are only making a fashion statement( they have no idea what that flag represents). Pride in your heritage is a lifelong process and the ability to showcase it in your everyday lives in this great country we live in . So don’t confuse a brief moment of “ hey look at me” but instead enjoy/cherish your achievement/accomplishment of: GRADUATION!!! Thats my opinion, thanks

In my case, when I graduated from both high school/ college, there was no need for any flag sash or any of that nonsense. First and foremost it was plain jane. Plus all it took to know my heritage was to look at me ( I was brown and proud)!!! And still am. Those were the days when all we cared about was to graduate and make our families proud!! And as far as the flag thing , everyone knew i was of Mexican heritage and that i was born/raised in the USA by two exemplary immigrants from Mexico (and lets not forget my grandparents). So everyday of my life has been Mexican-American and its been great. And I didn’t need a graduation ceremony wearing a rag with a flag around my neck to be proud of my heritage cause i live it everyday!!! Congratulations/best of luck to all this years graduates. Walk tall and be proud !!

Send her and all 50,000 of her relatives all receiving social service benefits back where they came from. If she loves Mexico so much what is she and her family doing here? Go find your true love. U.S.A. love it or leave, no matter your country of origin.

When in Rome do like the Romans. In this case she got her education in the USA. All she got from Mexico was an empty stomach. I am proud to be of Mexican heritage but it is the land of the free that has provided for my family.
