The Leon family on Apollo Drive in the city's Southmost barrio is literally floating in air after they learned that their daughter – Diana Leon, a Lopez High School grad – walked away with the top prize in the NBA Math Hoops Championship as a Texas Ace Program Specialist at J. T. Breckenridge Elementary School of the San Antonio Independent School District.
Leon and Daniela Rodriguez, a fifth-grade student in the schools Extended Day Program Texas Afterschool Centers on Education (TX ACE) were the only two chosen from among the 206,000 South Texas region students who participated in the 2022-2023 NBA Math Hoops.
The Brownsville native was chosen as Exemplar Educator of 2023 from among 2,500 educators by Learn Fresh, a non-profit organization which manages the NBA Math Hoop. The Global NBA Hoops Championship will be held June 21-24 in New York City.
Learn Fresh's mission is "though community, play, and rigorous exploration, we leverage students' passion for sports, and entertainment to inspire their STEM and social-emotional learning. We envision a world in which students find learning so engaging that they want to do it all the time."
The announcement of the award to Leon and her student Daniela was made by TX ACE Program Coordinator Robert E. Calvillo in a brief ceremony at Breckenridge Elementary where Daniela was given a Miss Liberty crown by her fellow students and staff who were on hand to wish her luck in the upcoming competition. She not only represents Breckenridge and the SAISD, but also the entire South Texas region.
"Diana was always an outstanding student and athlete," said her proud father Leopoldo Leon. "She excelled in academics and played volleyball and basketball at Lopez. She also worked hard to get her college degree. Her mother and me are so very proud of her for this award. The whole family is behind her and we are cheering for her in the New York competition. Win or not, she's our champion. Brownsville and the Southmost area will have a representative in the NBA Hoops in New York."

Congratulations to Ms. Leon and her student Daniella. Any teacher who had
Ms. Leon at Lopez High School should be commended for her achievement. I am sure she had Mrs. Elizabeth Hernandez or Mrs. Anna Camarillo in the teacher
career path class and so congratulations to them too. I taught at Lopez High
and feel some sense of pride, but never had this young lady, but a teacher
earns her pay with students who excel in our career. Congratulations to her
parents, also.
