A 32-year-old Brownsville man has been charged with eight counts of manslaughter and 10 counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon after he allegedly plowed his Range Rover Sunday morning into a crowd of about 30 Venzuelan migrants crowded at a bus stop, most of them sitting on the curb because there are no benches or shelter at the stop in front of the Ozanam Center on Minnesota Road.
The driver was captured at the scene by other migrants when his vehi he flipped over and he tried to escape, police said. Alvarez, who has a lengthy criminal rap sheet, is being held under arrest at a local hospital. Some community members had asked that he be denied bond by the municipal court judge who arraigned him.
The municipal court cannot deny a suspect bond, said a court staffer.
"Only district courts have the authority to deny bond," they said. "The only other option they have is to set a high bond depending on the seriousness of the charges, and this is about as serious as you can get."
Meanwhile, the community will gather tonight at 6 p.m. at the Linear Park to hold a vigil in memory and in solidarity of the eight migrants who died in the Sunday morning crash. The public is encouraged to attend. Candles will be provided by the organizers.
Cameron County District Attorney Luis V. Saenz and Brownsville Police Chief Felix Sauceda led a press conference this morning. During their presentation, they listed Alvarez's previous convictions. They include:

* 1 Assault on an elderly person
* 4 Assault family violence upon family members
* 1 Assault of a public servant
* 2 Theft from vehicle
* 1 Assault resulting in bodily harm
* Criminal Mischief
* Driving While Intoxicated
* 1 Attempt to evade arrest
* 1 Interference with the duties of a public servant
* 1 Obstruction and Retaliation
* 1 Possession of marijuana under 2 ounces
* 1 Evading and Resisting Arrest, Search, and Transport
* 1 Theft of Property over $50 but below $500

Your entry on El Boy, Ricky Hernandez is important here, Ricky and this Guy George Alvarez are Brothers.
Ricky is in jail for the killing of 4 juveniles when he was a teenager himself. He was also charged with the Murder that he committed or was part of committing right across the street from the immigrant's accident. Guy was shot to death at the parking lot of Dario's the store across the street from the accident.
