MENDEZ TO BE MIA FOR TUESDAY'S CITY TRANSFER OF POWER

Special to El Rrun-Rrun

Everything was set for the Tuesday, May 16 transfer of power from outgoing City of Brownsville Mayor Juan "Trey" Mendez to May 6 election winner and former At-Large-A commissioner John Cowen, the latest generation of one of the city's pioneer families.

The other two winners of the commission election – Linda Macias and Bryan Martinez – also take their oaths at the same time. The swearing in of the At-Large-A commissioners, will wait until the outcome of the runoff election between Tino VIllarreal and Susan Ruvalcaba,

The last ballots from overseas and the military received six days after the May 6 elections, that is May 12, on Friday, officially closes the voting period. The city commission at their next regular meeting next Tuesday (May 16) would accept the results and the new mayor and commissioners are administered their oaths of office by a jurist of their choice.

But there was a hitch. Mendez had scheduled a trip out of the city on Tuesday and had proposed that a ceremonial transfer of power between him and Cowen be held during a special meeting to be held this Friday, that is, tomorrow.

The two new commissioners –Macias and Martinez – would not take part in the ceremonial transfer of power and would have to wait until Tuesday to be sworn in. The special meeting agenda had been posted and only Cowen's refusal to take part in a meaningless ceremony prevented it from happening.

"John would have none of it," said one of his supporters. "Why start his term dividing the commission by holding a meaningless ceremony while the other two new commissioners had to wait until Tuesday just to please Mendez? He refused and the city secretary took down the special meeting notice."

We checked the city secretary's site (when it works) and confirmed that it had been cancelled and that the new mayor and commissioners will be administered the oath of office Tuesday as had been planned all along before Mendez tried to move the mayoral transfer of power to Friday. In his case, with Mendez missing in action, the mayoral gavel will be handed to Cowen by Mayor Pro-Tem Roy De los Santos.

City sources say that a separate ceremony and reception is planned to thank Mendez and outgoing District 1 and District 2 commissioners, Nurith Galonsky and Jessica Tetreau, respectively, at a later date.

"Whether you liked them or not, they gave of their time and effort to serve the city," De los Santos said. "It's only right."

The move by Mendez to hold a special meeting so it would not inconvenience his travel plans are a far cry from his campaign promises under the heading of  "Internal Diplomacy" where he states that "team building and team work are needed for any city to be successful. I bring people together and get things done....It's not about me or anyone else, it's about what's best for Brownsville."

Obviously, holding a special meeting for his personal convenience doesn't ring true to this "internal diplomacy" plank of his campaign platform. How things and people change and yet remain disappointingly the same.

We hear that Martinez will ask 484th District Court Judge Adela Kowalski-Garza to administer his oath of office and have advanced queries to the others and are awaiting their replies which will be posted when received.

Mendez… a very disappointing longhorn…who had an embarrassing tenure as one of the worse mayors in Brownsville history. A mama’s boy who needs to get out of the closet and hold hands with Erasmo Castro on there way to the candy store

What a loser. It is the least he could do for Brownsville, if he cared. Esta Como Lord Forckwad he needs to compensate.

Mendez was, is, and always will be remembered as anti environment, anti labor and pro big buisness-special interests mayor.

So what?

One corrido ends and the new one begins. Trey Mendez was roundly endorsed by all the city's bloggers when he ran for mayor. Now, they shit on him.

That's what's wrong with Brownsville, always betraying.

Hayseed John Cowen will disappoint.

bank it.

Mendez knew months if not a year ago to hold this date open. He did not. It is sad to see him go out such a privileged sore loser.

John Cowen talking like all new mayors about getting stuff done. Fake shit here for the past 50 years!

He'll fail.

Bald guys have a weakness they cannot overcome - the sun fries their brains.

Look for Cowen to be a one-term mayor.

Good riddance. We all knew what a loser this guy was all along, so why would this move surprise you? His whole so called administration was always about him and only him to the end . Go on your trip and never come back!!! If anyone had a doubt about his commitment to Brownsville, well here you have it!! And as far as De los Santos, RELAX buddy, you’ll still get your chance to kiss their ass officially one more time ( in that farewell ceremony you’re defending ) before they leave. Go on and enjoy being Mayor pro temp for a couple of days and bask in that POWER . LOL

Trey Mendez: change your trip so that you can be there in the ceremony.

Sometimes, things like this happen: 10 events the same day. You have to choose.

Choose Brownsville Trey Mendez. You own most of Brownsville, and you work here too.

Citizens beware: Susan is cutting deals as if she's won the run-off already, if we don't act she will attempt to appoint ERASMO, Caty Presas, and William G on various boards.

Citizens beware: Susan and her constituents paid for MAGA and TRUMP Lamar billboard posters

Citizens beware: Susan has removed her hate, anti-gay, and support of the Jan. 6th insurrection post from her social media. Let's not forget she's a Q supporter, we cannot allow such an extremist be elected in our city.

What did Mendez do for Brownsville...ABSOLUTELY NOTHING.

Trey needs to come out of the closet. Erasmo Castro too. Erasmo was his bff and both were inseparable and dating? Erasmo then showed his love for Trump and he is really a con man like Trump. Erasmo begged for City funds for his Church downtown. He paraded all over the schools and would get free lunch but all that went dry. He has lost every race he has been paid to run. The losers go on his show and complain. His Church got a lot of PPP loan money and Erasmo went and traveled. He will next be running for Cameron County Sheriff as per church attendee. Juan, how many elections has this guy run in Cameron County?

I'm not bothered by what Mendez did. He knows what's coming for local Mexicans under Cowen.

Poor residents. Talk about being ignored and forgotten.

One door ends and a new door is open to the same as the Last 5 new doors that did nothing for Brownsville. Brownsville is the laughing stock of the RGV. Saw Jessica crying while washing cars to get extra money to pay her politicatas? Golasky was moving out of the Southmost area because she only knew one street, boca chica Blvd. The out going mayor went to church because God open his eyes and he found out he was in Brownsville all the time! The new mayor of Brownsville Cowen will do wonders for Brownsville, first: PUB utilities will be lower by .000007654 of a penny. Second: Resaca Fees will go up again? Third: garbage rates will go up again because the city gets a bite of hike rate that no knows how the city spends that money? Bike and hike trails for mother bicycle devil.
