NEW COMMISSION MEANS MUSICAL CHAIRS FOR SAN BENITO

Dear Editor,

Typical San Benito.

We hire an eminently qualified Interim City Manager (Gavino Sotelo) only to micro manage him into resigning...as if the mayor and city commissioners know more than this man about how to run a town.

(Manuel De La Rosa was terminated “without cause” by the city commission June 6. the action
followed a lengthy executive session by the city commission during the meeting. The only "nay" vote was cast by commissioner Carol Lynn Sanchez who posted her opinion said on social media.

“The city manager was let go with an entire contract payout and that a prospective candidate is waiting to come in...Man, if citizens don’t see how backwards we’re going here, I don’t know what will wake you up,” she included in her post.

On June 6, city commissioners voted 4-1 to buy out De La Rosa’s contract, agreeing to pay nine months’ severance pay based on his $175,000 annual salary plus a benefits package.)

And his replacement, interim city manager Gavino Sotelo, resigned after only three weeks on the job, as the city’s new commission searches for a replacement amid its hunt to fill the city manager’s position.

(The San Benito News reported June 12 that commissioners picked City Secretary Ruth McGinnis to serve as interim city manager until they appoint a new city manager with the city’s department heads are helping McGiniss, who’s been serving as city secretary for more than five years, run daily operations)

But all that appears to be par for the course. Other qualified, competent people have been rejected by the less than 5 percent of the voters who effectively keep local politician in power.

I've admired Mr. Gavino Sotelo for years, hoping to get him elected on the commission or school board, but it appears the citizens of San Benito don't want a highly qualified person to run the town or school... just someone who does as he is told.

Well, Mr. Sotelo doesn't work that way. I respect his intelligence, his judgment and his decision to resign. I feel sorry for our ignorant town and its leaders. Since the same people who run the city are now also running the school district, I expect the same treatment for the superintendent.

Yes, Typical San Benito.
We shoot ourselves in the foot every time.

Sincerely,
Tomas Montemayor

San Bene has been know as the town that time forgot. It has been going on for years n years. That is why that city is boxed in by the surrounding cities and has no place to grow. So all the past city commissioners can be blamed for that. IMO.

Didn’t Mr. Sotelo run for San Benito Commission a few years back against Mr Rene Villafranco and lost. Why the citizens voted for Mr Villafranco instead of the Highly qualified Mr Sotelo is beyond me. So yes San Bene is an exception.
