UNANIMOUS BCIC BOARD GAVE TREY MENDEZ $85,000 DESPITE CODE OF ETHICS' YEAR PROHIBITION ON FORMER OFFICALS

 Special to El Rrun-Rrun

According to the proceedings of the July 20 meeting of the Brownsville Community Improvement Corporation (BCIC), all five of the seven members of the board who attended considered all 13 grant application recommendations by BCIC CEO Cori Peña and Community Development Manager Miriam Suarez and voted for them individually.

Among them – fourth from the top – was one for the property owner at 1018 E. Washington, the old Coca Cola building, which is owned by Urban 8 Properties LLC, registered under former mayor Trey Mendez. The majority voted to award him the money despite the City of Brownsville's Code of Ethics which prohibits former elected officials from doing business with the city for at least a year after they leave public office.

In fact, Mendez voted to appoint most, if not all, of the members of the BCIC board who voted to give him the money during his four-year term before he left office this past May.

Chapter 38, Section III specifically prohibits former city officials to have any financial interest, direct or indirect, with the city until a year has passed.

The following BCIC board members voted to approve the money in apparent violation of the code:

Voting Yes:
Chair Jill Dominguez
Tracy Wickett
City Commissioner Linda Macias, who promised voters she would leave the board 12 days after her election, and is still there almost three months into her term
Murad Abusalim
Secretary Cesar Lopez

Not Present
Zoraima Diaz
Vice Chair Mark Horowitz

If this information is true, what are the authorities ( whoever this may be: DAs office. FBI, Texas Rangers, Deputy Dog, Barney Fife!!!) waiting for??? Its not like its the first time this is done. This is $$$$ being given away to millionaires by their own minions. Does this money belong to them? Why are people asked to fill out applications for these grant monies when only the “ chosen ones” will receive them ultimately ?? Isn’t this a scam in plain sight?? Aren’t we constantly warned by the authorities to be aware and vigilant about scammers?? These entities are definitely the ATMs for the rich/ privileged!! Totally shameful.

Shame on you LINDA MACIAS

Regardless of the impropriety, the downtown area needs a SHOT IN THE ARM and only the brave hearted politically connected can take the gamble of investing and the extra free handout of CASH could just be the catalyst to a renewal of our old downtown lady.
In the old days the bars and the stores were the epicenter. Not so now. Just bars, restaurants and a couple of jewelry stores and a couple of variety stores.
Hope for the best.

the ordinance clearly says sale to the city of land or entering into a contract. Where's the contract Montoya? be fair or you lose credibility.

Linda Macias is a small big dissapointment. Never would I have thought her as a greedy little woman. We were all conned by her smooth talk. I guess she has a lot of practice being a con artist. Most con artists can lie to your face with no remorse. Jill Kohler Dominguez is still the winner is deception. She seems like such a straight shooter. Why she would go along with the corruption is confusing. Oh well, I guess money, power along with the feeling of being part of the elite group changes everyone. We all know Cesar Lopez is a seasoned con artist, so no suprise there. He was appointed by Commissioner Pedro Cardenas. Enough said. Both are Ratas con dos patas.

What type of corruption existed in many city governments?
Forms of corruption pertaining to money like bribery, extortion, embezzlement, and graft are found in local government systems. Other forms of political corruption are nepotism and patronage systems.

Linda Macias is a true con artist. Her boyfriend is running the show. Those who voted for her were gullible enough to think she was so nice, sweet. Pura mentira. She only cares about herself. Now she call herself a QUEEN. Oh please,,,queen of nothing. She said in Captain Bob show that all people had to do was ask her for a grant. Hello!!!SHE WAS BADICALLY TELLING THEM. FOR SOME CASH I WILL SEE YOU GET A GRANT. DONT YOU THINK I WOULD BE WILLING TO GIVE HER 10 OR 20 GRAND IF I GOT 200,000. WAKE UP THAT'S WHY THEY WANT TO BE COMMISSIONERS AND GET ON THE CITY BOARDS. THEY GET MONEY. BIG MONEY. RATAS DE DOS PATAS IS RIGHT. INSTEAD OF REALLY FIXING DOWNTOWN THEY EMBEZZLE THE MONEY. AND WHAT DOES CORI PEÑA SAY ABOUT THIS? NADA NADA NADA. NOT 1 WORD. BUNCH OF CROOKS ALL OF THEM. HELLO LINDA!!! DID YOU RESIGN YET. DONT TAKE TOO LONG.AND HOT SHE IS NOT.UNLESS YOU ARE HARD UP FOR A A MOUSY LOOKING GIRL!!! WAKE UP PEOPLE.

We'll just call it " The Fox guarding the Hen House" when our commissioners appoint their friends. In plain sight, they know exactly what they are doing and are shameless. Linda Macias, you went block walking, you came to my house and sure are acting very different now. Your promises got flushed away as soon as you were elected. Eres "Puro Pedo"

No one did anything corrupted, there was leftover grant money from projects that did not take-off. The options were (1) lose out completely by not issuing it or (2) issue it out before September 30th (END of fiscal year). Musk grants will be replenished in October once again.

Montoya your obvious bias towards Macias is blatant, think about if Montoya, why should she leave BCIC? Only because her opposition says so? Thats a dumb reason, so no. Because they accuse of her of being on there illegally? City attorney cleared her, Cowen sits on GBIC, so No once again. So what is the real reason people would want her off of it? There really isn't one, especially if the only ones yelling were never in her corner anyways, she's not doing anything illegal by sitting on that board, but as usual they just seem to want something to complain about. You people need to think a little bit, not just assume!

I guess if you're pretty you can be corrupt? What a moron. No wonder things don't change in this town. Too many stupid people!

It seems that the people we vote into serving the community are weak when it comes to money. They have no conscious in that respect.

The land grant where this so-called Coca Cola building is setting is stolen land with lots of unclaimed minerals under the surface. This involves the grant monies that he will "probably" get and also profit off when he knowingly applied before the 2019 statute of limitations, applying as a small business. He allegedly purchased the coca cola building with the land where its sits, knowingly and planning to turn around and sell it to the city of Brownsville for a MUCH, MUCH higher price. He as a REAL ESTATE Investor and knows how or should have some knowledge of how to steal from the poor to enrich himself. This has been and still is the way or method that corrupt Charles Stillman, Richard King, Miflin Kennedy, and the Yturrias set-up the Cameron County District courts to take over the City of Brownsville and steal the land. To hold this corrupt greedy political leader responsible would involve taking the Whole Cameron County Judicial down, and that is the main horse and pony show in Cameron County that still runs Cameron County. This is my opinion.

The judgements here are not that these people have or made money but rather how they set it up to get it. They got the money through the disguise of helping the people. However, according to them they did nothing wrong. What a joke!

6:24 I must remind you Linda was elected, she’s a women who devotes her free time to her family (when done with city and work issues),those out of town Conventions were a big hit for her opponent were Katy, apparently she was a smashing hit at those deals, if you know what I mean! Don’t mix a winner and a loser in your jargon!

1:05 the only “puro pedo” you have to deal with is the false picture this blog continues to try to paint of her, there are no facts in the article, the article continues to try and spin your view on how “grant” money was given out, they paint it as corruption. The author makes no mention that only 12 people applied for this grant money, every applicant got a piece of the grant. How that grant money was broken down was graded on a scale by the day time employees at BCIC (Pena and her crew), this was then presented to the board who approved “grant” money. How do you not issue out “grant” money to the people that applied? 12 applied, 12 received.

Anonymous said...

For the record you fools realize this a reimbursement “grant” the owner of the facility or business has to waste their own money and return receipts with proper documentation in order to have the “grant” money replenish what they spent! If a business/applicant does not provide proper documentation they get “0” reimbursed!Once again another BS story!

I understand. So the grant is not really money. The owner of the facility uses his money and then gives money to the City. So the owner is paying TWICE.
That is play money, like Monopoly.
So why bother with the grants. The City is the one that it is stealing, according to you.

poor Owners. They pay double the money just to help the City of Brownsville.
