EXTENT OF MASSIVE CAPITOL THEATER ROOF COLLAPSE REVEALED: THREE MONTHS AFTER, HISTORIC BUILDING STILL LIES IN RUINS

.
Special to El Rrun-Rrun

When we first reported on the roof collapse of the historic Capitol Theater last May 23, we were told that the damage was minor and that the city crews would fix it presently and in short order. Put a tarp over the hole and repair in-house. No biggie.

Well, now we know different. As can be seen in these photos sent to us by one of our eight readers, contrary to the assurances by city officials and elected officials the damage was massive and appears to be the result of rusted steel and cross beams giving way to the weight of a huge antique air conditioning unit on the heavy wooden roof.

To those of us who went to Saturday morning movies there, the entrance on Levee Street can be seen in the far center of the bottom photo below the concrete balcony.

City workers barricaded 11th Street from Levee in case the compromised integrity of the structure could lead to the collapse of the walls and crush cars or pedestrians on the sidewalk. But it's been three months already and we're in the middle of hurricane season.

It's interesting to note that the wall facing 11th Street bears the $25,000 BTX mural paid by the Elon Musk Foundation which was "vandalized" by Beka Hinojosa when she scribbled graffiti protesting the gentrification of downtown.

We always crow about our historical wealth, but don't seem to place any value in it, content to let it crumble around us. The University of Texas at the Rio Grande Valley just announced it is considering spending $47 million to buy, restore, and transform the Majestic Theater, which dates back to 1948.

The Capitol, which is owned by the city, opened in 1928 and is located one block away from the Majestic, which itself is across Elizabeth Street fro City Hall.

Ironically, the $17 million renovation of the historic El Jardin Hotel has started across the street from the Capitol building with an expected completion date of Dec. 31, 2024, according to records filed with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation.

When downtown rel-estate mogul Abraham Galonsky donated the theater to the City of Brownsville back in December 2016, and Musk the mural, they probably meant it to be a public attraction, not a public hazard. Where's the $100,000 that the city commision allocated to fix that roof when George Ramirez was alive?

We do have a city commission and a well-paid city manager, don't we? Three months seems a wee bit derelict. Six years is abandonment.

Below is a rendering of the planned revitalization of both El Jardin and the Capitol posted by the Brownsville Society for the Performing Arts on their page that hasn't happened up to now.

It was included in the BSPA's planned Entertainment District but the $10 million set aside for its revitalization was hijacked by then-city commissioner Dr. Joe Zavaletta and funneled to the Sports Park. Typically, the park was supposed to cost $10 million but ballooned to $20 million.

Given its current condition as a result of the city's neglect, will its revitalization ever come true?

Wow! Glad that didn't happen a few years ago when they used to do events there and pack the place. People would have died.

Thats going to happen to other downtown building's soon enough. Especially City Hall. They have been warned about that building's problems including

• Foundation problems
• Cracks on the ceiling
• Rotten wood
• Flooding
• Loose wiring hanging all over the attic & basement

When that building falls and that huge air conditioner + gym equipment comes crashing down, many lives will be lost.

Nothing really historic about that building.

It was just old.

say old, not historic.

Not every fucking thing downtown is historic. leave the superlatives for that which deserves the word. Not much in Brownsville, I know.

(plus Brownsville is a dirty town. It never cleans up anything. look at its alleys and awful streets.)

You're crying for no reason, Toya.

According to the article and what the city officials said: “Oh it’s something MINOR the city crews can take care of it”. Who was asked , one of the janitors at city hall?? What im saying is if that report was given by an inspector or one of the “ experts” at city hall , are we the citizens safe when these guys go out and deem a structure safe???? Should we trust them. 3:58 is absolutely correct in their comment. Can you imagine the tragedy when they had those festivals in there and there was a sudden heavy downpour of rain ? Talk about another Tienda Amigo disaster. I believe the city just dodged a bullet on this one. Makes me wonder how many more other structures dating back to those times are also unsafe and about to crumble. I wouldn’t trust our officials to give us their opinion or expertise ( or lack of)!!! Talk about a bunch of inept and incompetent flunkies.

The people in charge don't prioritize.

"Prioritize. Prioritize what is that?"

I went to see PT109 with my cousins at the Capitol in 1963. I was 7years old at the time. Had an awesome time that I'll never forget until the day I die.

PLEASE HIRE THIRD PARTY FOR CLEAN UP. EASIER, CHEAPER, CLEANER, AND ONE LEAD CREW LEADER FOR A SIMPLE JOB.

YOU WOULD THINK, THAT THEY WOULD BE ON TOP OF THERE OWN PROPERTIES REPAIR AND MAINTENANCE. NO ONE TAKES RESPONSIBILITIES. LACK OF MAINTENANCE DEPARTMENT SUPERVISOR,ASST MANAGER, MANAGER, DIRECTOR, ASST CITY MANAGER, CITY MANAGER, CITY COMMISSIONERS,MAYOR.

A building built in 1948 is not historic just old. Now the Alamo is historic. It is apparent that city administrators need to go back to school to learn the definition of historic. In an attempt to cleanup the city, a demolition crew should begin demolishing all the so called historic buildings that have been left to deteriorate for years. We have enough trash!

Instead of giving grants to the wealthy the COB should be fixing the old buildings it owns.

Again, Brownsville is just plain stupid but the biggest idiots are the voters of Brownsville for not voting on election day against these idiot city government.

I still remember the Annual Latin Jazz Festival was a fundraising event for the Capitol Theater. So much for all those years of raising cash for nothing.

The word "Historical " is only a smoke screen so past and present public officials don't have to pay a penny on property taxes. We even have warehouses that are designed "Historical " but they are being rented for profit. Bunch of money hungry people.

Anonymous said...

Miren pendejos. No historical event had to of taken place in a building for it to be considered historical. A building can simply be considered historical because of its by gone architecture style. Especially if it was built by a famous architect that designed and built other famous building around the country.

Brownsville remains a shithole.

It's what its residents want.

No, demand!!!

Makes you wonder when was the last time City Hall was inspected by a structural engineer?

Anonymous said...

The building next to fall is city hall. That building has so many roof leaks and the basement is falling apart. Where are the building inspectors? Too busy issuing fines for noncompliance to other building owners.

The "Total Alignment " concept, do as I say not as I do. Pathetic leadership.

Putin can remodel downtown any time at no cost freeeee...

THE NEXT BUILDING TO FALL IS CITY HALL.
TOO MANY OVERPAID EMPLOYEES WITH POCKETS FULL OF MONEY, IS MAKING CRACKS IN THE FLOOR.
