A senior at Brownsville’s Saint Joseph Academy was one of two people killed in a freeway wreck with a wrong-way driver. It happened early Sunday morning on the eastbound lanes of I-2 in Donna.
Police say four students from the academy were driving back to Brownsville from McAllen when their Toyota SUV was hit head-on by a Volkswagen sedan traveling the wrong way.
Killed was 17-year-old Anuar Jobi who was riding in the back seat. The three other students, also seniors, were hospitalized and are said to be in stable condition.

(News of the Jobi's death and that of the driver and injuries of the other three St. Joseph's Academy staff and student body sent shock waves through the student body and alumni and messages of condolences proliferated on social media asking for their love and prayers toward the family.)
The crash also killed the driver of the Volkswagen, identified as Astulfo Cantu Junior of Palmview. Grief counselors have been called in to Saint Joseph’s for anyone needing help coping with the student’s sudden death.

All minors. Parents should be arrested for child neglect!
Fuckin losers!!!
Kids were in Downtown McAllen. The 17th Street bars?
Say it, so other kids don't die like this!!!!
Not my problem.
Life goes on, ese.
The loss of a young life due to a head-on collision caused by a drunk driver is a heartbreaking event that serves as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of irresponsible choices.
Let's honor the memory of the teenager whose life was tragically cut short, while shedding light on the importance of addressing the issue of drunk driving among young people.
By remembering the individual behind the tragedy and raising awareness about the dangers of drunk driving, we can honor their memory and work towards a safer and more responsible future on our roads.
Life is short, Baby.
You gotta live it safely.
(Montoya does it right; he walks to the downtown cantinas)
Terrible tragedy.
If you know the family of this young man: support them, pray for them and give a helping hand to them.
Out at night doing what? Bar hopping and their luck run out. Did they check those people if they were also drinking? The driver didn't see the other driver and kept on driving? How fast were they driving too? No questions will be asked?
Sad that a young life was lost.
The fact that they were coming from Mcallen at that time says that 1) They had an automobile 2) if they were minors, parents gave them the car to go but they don't follow the designated driver . If it was a weekend and they were not ordinary laborer kids they could have stayed in Mcallen or the mid valley to sleep the hangover. 3) If you go to St. Joe the Catholic schools, the bishop, all Catholics are in mourning but a poor kid dies in Southmost, Portway, Las Prietas, and lets turn the pg.?
We are here now but can be gone in the next second. When it comes to your loved ones live life without regrets. Kiss and hug those you love. Always remember that actions speak louder than words.
At 17 he was a baby.
2:52 pm Well said. I agree with all your statements.
5:43 tell us how you really feel Zeke Silva ….. Zeke you should learn from this, how many times has Luis Saenz got you out from drunk driving? 4x??? Maybe more… How many times did he bail out his niece and nephew when he ran into someone and fled the scene? Luis Saenz, let this be a lesson for you as well, you can no longer evade your preferred constituents from the exact same crimes that were committed in this article. Change is coming! NOE! NOE! NOE!
Death does not discriminate. If a teenager from the Barrio dies it is "que pobresito." If it is a teenager from a family with economic means it is "what a loss." Either way it is tragic.
Rest in peace and condolences to his family. be nicce,, dont tbe haters.
Ok.....Let's be serious about this entire tragedy. I can never imagine the thought of losing a child nor can I imagine the reason for some of these ugly comments. I do believe we can have an informed conversation. If for one minute, we think deeply about this situation we can find some common factors. Common factor number one, St Joseph's Academy prides itself on its drink till you drop mentality.
All alcohol related deaths have been St Joe's football players, related, that is in the entire RGV in the last 20 years.so 100 percent of all Alcohol related vehicular deaths of football players in the RGV have been from St Joe's. This is not coincidence it's called poor leadership.
Coach "Tino" has a drink till you drop attitude, Tino regularly talks to his players about his drinking escapades and has been known to drink with his players. Tino is a poor example for these kids and has failed to guide these young men. Tino is not a good example but an individual that contributes to the drunk and dangerous behaviors of the St Joes football players. Players from the St Joes football team jokingly share videos and memes of Coach Tino drunk and passed out on a recent trip sponsored by St Joes to Europe.
Assistant Coach, Luigi Cristiano sponsors drink till you drop events at his house for football players. These kids run the school and get by with whatever they want because of this luxury and connection to booze. The only way you can be popular and gain access to all of this special treatment is drink with the Cristiano's. Everyone knows this and everyone is afraid to say anything.
St Joes, if you care about these kids do something about this, if you don't then more will die in alcohol; related incidents, Luigi and Tino you both have blood on your hands, I hope you feel cool. Attorney's (If Any) St joes allows this it is easy to prove they have ignored this problem and let Tino and Luigi run the school.
Pongase a jalar instead of hating and depending on the government for handouts. Maybe your lazy azzes can get out of the Barrio too!
Do you know where your kids are or what they are doing? Now you know. Unfortunately it's too late.
As part of the Saint Joe community, I am disgusted and saddened by what has occurred. And, I think, what is a 17 year old doing out of his home at 2:00, 3:00 in the morning? Why are parents allowing such behavior? Why not put your foot down and simply set rules.
It’s no time to blame, however it is time to reflect. What in the lords name are parents thinking? We as parents are to guide our children. This happens by setting rules, boundaries, and examples., in an attempt to avoid situations that sometimes are irreversible.
May Anuar Jobi Rest in peace. Let his early passing be a reminder to all that our actions as parents and our inactions have consequences.
@6:21pm.. you need to back up you claims with real data, otherwise, your "serious" talk seems like BS. You speak as if you have the data readily available, so it wouldn't be to much of an ask to publish it.
lets not forget that the DRUNK DRIVER was Astolfo Cantu, had he lived he would have been found guilty of manslaughter, he would have probably also been charged with attempted murder of a State Trooper he almost crashed into. He was drunk and driving against the traffic at 3:00am on an interstate, the driver of the other vehicle was a designated driver.
I don't see a lot of talk about the parents of the drunk driver, driving against traffic on an interstate. Maybe because he was barrio and on this blog, thats OK to do if you're barrio. He died, he dealt a great blow to his family too, he took another persons life with him. Cantu should not have been drunk, Cantu should not have been driving on the wrong side of an interstate. That has got to be the most stupidest joy ride I've ever heard of, that is, borderline suicide and manslaughter. But let's not blame Cantu's parents, he's barrio, he's not SJA, he isn't privileged, his parents can let him do whatever he wants. cause pobrecito.
If you're going to write about the death of an innocent, rear passenger, you should write about the drunk driver, killer too. His name was Astolfo Cantu.
Also, as a member of the St Joe community I am heartbroken about what happened this weekend but surprised it has not happened more often. Tino and Luigi should be fired immediately! They have turned our once wonderful school into not only an embarrassment but also an unsafe environment. This has gone unchecked by the complacent administration for years. This is precisely why so many alumni do not send their kids to St. Joe anymore. Enough is enough!
This is an unfortunate outcome of irresponsible drivers, as in the man who was intoxicated and struck the vehicle. Irresponsible parents who allowed minors to travel to downtown Mcallen with the intent to do nothing other than party. Poor judgement on behalf of the students. They should have never been allowed to be in Mcallen at clubs much less driving home at 3:30 AM. I highly doubt they were not intoxicated themselves to a degree.
As for the comments regarding their coach, I too have heard multiple stories over the last several years involving South Padre Island Condo Parties, Europe trips and even local areas where the coach "Villarreal" is drinking with these underaged kids.
Leading by example should be his priority and this is a poor example! This should be a wakeup call for St Joe administration..
Molty is well aware, he chooses to overlook situations. I’m so glad I no longer have to see these Neanderthals care for my children. Upsetting enough, at the time, saint joe was our safest choice! Ridiculous
This family is now living with the could'ves, should'ves, and would'ves. I "unforgivable" to live a life like that.
Parents should always be aware of what their children are doing. If a parent feels that something is off with their son's/daughter's plans offer to take them where they are going. If your child doesn't want you to go then don't give them permission to go. After you say no be vigilant for the child to try to pull a fast one.
A whole lot of stupid comments. Why don’t you all ask for the toxicology report on both drivers and then judge, do I agree with the statements on kids shouldn’t be driving back from mcallen, yes I do. But saying it’s their fault is bullshit. Cantú Jr had multiple DWI in the past and is 100% responsible, he was driving the WRONG WAY on the expressway. It doesn’t matter if he graduated from Harvard or UTB or if he lived in the “barrio” or the Hamptons. He is a murder and was a selfish drunk. So stop blaming Saint Joe it they come together and the barrio doesn’t it’s not there fault! Cantu should have lived and lived the rest of his life in jail.
And this is Astolfo Cantu Jr

This tragedy should be a wake up call to all of us St Joe parents. We have stood by and watched as our school has gone from a source of pride to an embarrassment. This has all happened under the "leadership" of Melissa Valadez and Michael Motyl. The inmates are running the asylum. They are responsible as they have known for years what has been going on and it is time they are held to account. There are no consequences for students (especially athletes). Bullying is not only tolerated but ignored. The academic standards are a joke and cheating is rampant. The administration made a deal with the devil by letting Tino and Luigi run the school. We have all remained silent since Tino holds all the power over our kids in sports and is extremely vindictive. If you question him, your child will sit on the bench, period. He has no boundaries and his relationships with students are extremely inappropriate. Students sit in his office with their feet on his desk, lay on his couch, and the relationships don't end when the bell rings. As for Luigi, the school is blinded by his money (PPP / COVID $ and Southwest Key / Ruben Gallegos $) and he and his family act as if the school is theirs. As parents and true Bloodhounds, we should either demand change or take our kids somewhere else. None of this should come as a surprise as the Devil always comes to collect sooner or later.
The St. Joe students need to start protecting each other and speak up about the inappropriate relationships going on between Coach Tino and the athletes, including drinking til you drop parties. I do pray that pics and videos will be released of the binge drinking parties here and abroad. It is the responsibility of teachers, parents and especially coaches to instill morals, lead by example, and drinking with underaged kids gives them an understanding of acceptance rather than avoidance. It’s a shame that a life was lost. Cantu was the intoxicated culprit, however if the kids were not out at 3:30 it would have been avoided.
