SHERIFF OR STATE REP? CHAMBERS WEIGHS HIS OPTIONS

Special to El Rrun-Rrun

Northeast Cameron County has grown rife with rumors that former Indian Lake Police Chief and former Sheriff candidate John Chambers is considering throwing his hat in the ring and returning his name to the ballot in this upcoming election cycle.

Chambers confirmed to El Rrun-Rrun that he has yet to decide whether he will run for Sheriff again or State Representative District 37. He says he is consulting with his supporters and will make a decision as Labor Day approaches.

Chambers came close to being elected Sheriff in 2020 after a successful primary win on the Republican side of the aisle, and his son James Chambers also considered at one point running for state representative two years ago but had to withdraw due to family matters. (Political pundits said he was the natural front-runner back then. given the redistricting that favored a Republican candidate.)

In the last runoff  gvelection Chambers was endorsed by the late incumbent sheriff, Democrat Omar Lucio.

The Chambers own several security companies and cleaning services and said that this time he would contribute the necessary funds to his campaign to seek a victory at the polls.

The older Chambers, who boasts of 26 years in law enforcement as the former chief of police with the Indian Lake, Gruver, and Hawley, Texas PDs, has shown he can attract the vote with his homey, honest, down-to-earth demeanor.

With the Cameron County Republican Party in a bit of disarray, a Chambers candidacy may provide an opportunity to unite the various factions, and a threat to incumbent Eric Garza, who has brought derision upon the department and has seen many experienced depties and correction guards leave the department in droves.
