(Ed.'s Note: Competition was tough for this year's 5th Annual Resaca Art Exhibit but the judges considered this unusual portrayal of our ox-bow lakes - or resacas - as an esoteric exercise showing a side of the resacas not often seen except for the annual emptying of these city-wide retaining ponds during the peak of summer.
"This unflattering view of our waterways shows us that even though our resacas are our cultural and regional heritage and trademark, we often neglect them by using them as trash receptacles," said head judge Artie Fartseigh. "The poignancy of the black and white ducks in the shallow channel and their fellows upstream lend this desolate portayal a sense of longing and yearning for their watery yesteryear. ")

Resacas? They are stink hole now! Restoration, my foot! But the fee is there every month. Has anyone taken a closer look at the algae and mess in the resacas? The old Lincoln Park Resaca smells just like East Avenue and nobody does anything about it. They come patch one hole on Lincoln Street but since the work order only states one address, they cover that one up and leave the one 12 inches away in the same condition. Lincoln Street is used as a short cut into the Southmost area and so the traffic is fast and furious, but the pot hole remain, so people use it as an obstacle course. The mayor and his commissioners should take a day and drive through and plot all those streets that are more pot holes than street. All streets in Brownsville should look like the Paredes Road they just finished - probably last one month or so. San Benito and Harlingen put Brownsville streets to shame!
Resaca fee at work! Pretty soon the Resacas will be the new bike and hike trails, no more Resacas.
