SpaceX is asking the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality for permission to dump 200,000 gallons of treated wastewater into the South Bay at Port Isabel.
The contaminants are removed from the wastewater, but some say the plan could become an issue for the environmental balance of the South Bay.
Port Isabel City Manager Jared Hockema said he's concerned freshwater added as wastewater will throw off the salt balance of the bay.
“Ultimately, our aim is to preserve the environment for the use of the public,” Hockema said. “They depend on access to the environment, people want a pristine natural environment – that's why they come to Port Isabel [and] South Padre island. This is a very popular fishing spot, unique ecological location. We want to make sure that's not impacted."
Channel 5 News reached out to TCEQ, who said residents adjacent to the bay and located downstream from it were notified of the proposal.
A time frame for the permit process isn’t currently available.

SpaceX is already dumping waste into the ocean. Don't expect them to tell you this much less admit it. SpaceX is like a cheating man. " It was not me. It was someone else who looks like me." How long has SpaceX been there? Musk already knew he was going to have waste. Why didn't he ask for permits earlier? Just because he is asking for permits doesn't mean he is not dumping waste into the bay. Chemicals are not being removed either. We are screwed 😔.
What I meant to write was that "we got fucked by SpaceX along time ago." Elon Musk should send all the chemical waste to Mars. When he goes to Mars he should take all his chemical waste with him. Fuck, South Bay is a beautiful rich area to fish. This is some bullshit Juan. When you go deeper into the area thats when you see tailing fins. But you have to have the boat and know your tides. I never wanted space x there or near that area.it’s a dam shame. If you have outdoorsman on your site you’re gonna hear the blow back.
