The event was hosted by city commissioner Brian Martinez and Lopez won the contest to paint it from among scores of local artists who submitted entries. Someone pointed out that in the photo below, Martinez is pictured against a backdrop of one of his fellow primates, too. The contest was sponsored by various entities including the Mexican Consul in Brownsville and the Musk Foundation. However, the consul and his personnel were Missing In Action, unlike the presentation of the butterfly mural at the building on the corner of 9th Street and Elizabeth.)
