If it wasn't for the thin sliver of shade of the Brownsville Public Utility Board light pole, the woman in the picture above knee-high in weeds waiting for the bus would have had to endure the summer heat out in the open.
That kind of synergetic collaboration between BusMetro and PUB has earned Brownsville (for an additional membership fee, of course) plaudits as an All-American City.
But thanks to City of Brownsville commissioner Rose Gowen and past administrations, the city has made sure that well-heeled recreational bicycle riders on the Brownsville’s Historic Battlefield Hike and Bike Trail, the Belden Trail, etc... have it easier and safer to walk and ride through her trials even at night.Every Certificate of Obligation (CO) issue approved by the city that includes transportation projects must include 10 percent of it for hike and bike trails. That has put more than $5 million (and counting) or more for Gowen's pet projects.
New bike and hike trail rest stops and a glow stone trail projects with budgets of $90,000 or more from the Parks and Recreation Department budget have eased the efforts of recreational cyclists to travel along the city's northern neighborhoods and far from the city's barrios.
The projects are divided into three phases. The first phase was installed from FM 802 behind the Brownsville Events Center. The second phase was from East Morrison Road to Alta Mesa Boulevard and the final phase was on Aurora Street.
“In the spots where there’s missing light it will at least have some photoluminescence for seeing the trail,” Parks and Recreation Director Damaris McGlone said at the time of the purchase.The city’s Parks and Recreation Department installed the trail. The glow stone product is from Core Landscape Products.
“Looking online and seeing what other cities are doing and more in Europe you see these glow stone trails and so it’s a great way to help light your trail and have a safer way to travel at night, so hopefully, over time all nine miles (of the trail) will get that,” McGlone said.
We wonder, has the city administration and Bus-Metro looked online to see what other cities around the world are doing to shelter their bus riders? Or at least provide the poor with some shade, aside from the PUB-provided light poles?
How many simple benches and overhangs could be built to protect bus riders like this woman for the $90,000 it cost to build the "glow stone" trail?

Yes, this is getting old. Why is it that the people that should love this folk are not giving them a ride? You know, in some cities public transportation is the way of life. Look at the bright side now there is a bus pickup practically every two blocks. People should learn the bus schedules and get there 10 minutes before the bus is due.

Rose Gowen and her pet projects have been a huge waste of taxpayer money!! Total money pits(hike /bike trails, farmers market bullshit, bike rental racks( most bikes stolen) etc). And she keeps being re-elected ?????? As far as bus shelters ( ongoing embarrassment issue for yrs) doesn’t the city have maintenance crews( carpenters, masonry workers etc) ?? That being said, i have a suggestion: as an avid DIY person ( as many of us think we are), i took few minutes and figured out a list of materials for an approx. 10Lx8Wx8H simple shelter(metal panel roof, concrete slab, covered walls on north/south sides, long bench) for approx. $1800 materials only ( give or take couple hundred more). They can build 1-5 a month.( How many are needed ?) So do the math. Remember, im no expert but im just trying to prove a point. My suggestion may sound ridiculous and frugal to some, but millions are spent on those pet projects mentioned above , so city leaders dont tell me something similar to what im talking about is not feasible??? Its just a matter of WANTING TO GIVE TO YOUR CONSTITUENTS instead of ALWAYS TAKING FROM YOUR CONSTITUENTS. My opinion, thanks for your time.

Street maintenance and drainage issues have never been a priority for the city. But useless bike lines downtown have always been a top priority. To top it off, soon the Farmer market vendors will have free storage space at the old Gutierrez warehouse and without paying g a cent to sell their products on city property. They all should go and sell their products at the 77 flea market and pay just like everyone else.
