HUEY CHOPPER DEDICATION HELD SATURDAY AT VETERANS PARK

The dedication ceremony of a Vietnam-era Bell UH-1 Iroquois “Huey” helicopter was held Saturday after it's planned ceremony  was delayed by inclement weather November 11. It was acquired by Warriors United in Arms who donated it to the city of Brownsville for public display. and to educate younger generations of the sacrifices made by previous generations during the war. 

After a long fundraising campaign in May 2023, the Warriors United in Arms succeeded in raising over $50,000 to purchase the Huey from Heli-Tex Properties, LTD of Cleburne, Texas The helicopter, named “Hope/Esperanza,” had been in storage in a hangar at the Brownsville-South Padre International Airport.dre International Airport.

The helicopter was placed at Veterans Park on Central Blvd. next to the memorial to WWII Medal of Honor winner Jose Lopez who lived in Brownsville and later moved to San Antonio.

Thank you, Larry Jokl, for being such an active member of the organization that was able to do this for the Veterans from Brownsville, many of whom left
school and classes with us in order to go serve in Viet Nam and those that went even after graduation. This is a great effort to recognize those that
had the guts to go and defend me and you from people who refuse to accept
that we all on kind and should not endorse any kind of war.It is also an honor to be side-by-side with Jose Lopez, our local hero and relative.
