(City Manager Helen Ramirez said that Avelo was going to increase other destinations when she and Mayor John Cowen went to Avelo headquarters in California in the summer. And commissioner Linda Macias during a city commission meeting stated that she spoke with Avelo and that Brownsville’s airport had more flight destinations than McAllen and Harlingen airport. Now the chickens have come to roost just as they did when AeroMexico was enticed with incentives to come to the Brownsville airport. Are we throwing good money after bad?)

FlightGlobal
US ultra-low-cost carrier (ULCC) Avelo Airlines is exiting four markets that did not develop as planned and intends to seasonally suspend a further nine routes.
The Southern California start-up told FlightGlobal on 21 November that “demand did not generate as hoped” on four routes – Raleigh-Durham (North Carolina) to Sarasota (Florida), New Haven (Connecticut) to Melbourne (Florida) and Las Vegas to Arcata (California) and Dubuque (Iowa). Those routes will be operated through early January and will not return.
The carrier had launched flights to Arcata and Dubuque in September, following its pattern of targeting markets with low or no air service. Competitors in the USA’s low-cost segment have recently observed softening domestic demand for leisure travel, however.
The ULCC is also seasonally suspending nine routes in the first quarter of next year, including Burbank (California) to Colorado Springs (Colorado) and Brownsville (Texas); Las Vegas to Brownsville; New Haven to Greenville (North Carolina), Savannah (Georgia) and Charleston (South Carolina); and Wilmington (Delaware) to Nashville (Tennessee), Myrtle Beach (South Carolina) and Daytona Beach (Florida).
Avelo did not specify when the seasonal flights will resume in 2024.

This is what Mayor "Fact-Driven" John Cowen) was saying in May: “Avelo Airlines’ arrival in Brownsville will not only boost our local economy, but also provide Rio Grande Valley residents and visitors with more travel options and flexibility. We wholeheartedly welcome Avelo to our City. This partnership reflects our city’s progressive spirit and commitment to fostering connections with the wider world.”
"Total Alignment" City Manager Helen Ramirez (commanding a $244,504 salary) said: "This is a tremendous step forward for our city and our airport. Avelo Airlines’ commitment to affordable, convenient travel aligns with our mission to provide the best services to our residents and visitors. We look forward to a fruitful partnership with Avelo, one that will benefit South Texas as a region.”
Former Brownsville South Padre Island International Airport Administrator "See ya Later" Bryant Walker who commanded a $132,657 salary) chimed in: “This is a momentous occasion for our city and our airport, and it marks a significant advancement in our ongoing commitment to make Brownsville more accessible to the world. We are excited about the potential growth that Avelo Airlines brings to our airport and City. This partnership will enhance our airport’s reputation and capacity as a regional hub of travel and commerce.”
”The rest of the routes are on a seasonal break due to scheduled heavy maintenance on our planes due to the delayed arrival of our new-to-us aircraft,” Avelo says. “As the Q1 time frame typically [has] lower demand in these markets, we chose to utilise this time to lessen frequencies and seasonally exit so our planes are in a good position for peak spring/summer travel.”
The carrier has 16 mid-life Boeing 737NG in service and does not have order commitments beyond those jets, according to Cirium fleets data.

So all those dollars that the city commission squandered at the recommendation of manager Ramirez have been for naught, just like the $500,000 to $750,000 she lost on Space-related industries without performing any background checks for "quick-wins" to enhance her alleged professionalism are also gone?

Seasonally will soon become permanently!
Se les acabo el corrido luego, luego!
Avelo said in the beginning the Vegas flights would be seasonal. As far as I know Avelo has had no problem meeting minimum flight capacity and the city has not paid them for any empty seats. I will never fly them because my deal with American is so great. I changed from United to AA when AA went to cheaper flights. But can tell you when you add in all the ad-ons Avelo charges, the cost of a United or AA seat to Orlando and LA went down big time.
Lol City of Browntown is a complete failure in all aspects. Especially the stupid people.
Another business loser!
Brownsville can't catch a break, ese.
FYI. The real story is that Gov. Abbott is gonna use the airline fleet of jets to send excess Venezuelans to work in the Casinos.
Brownsville new businesses:
Here today, Gone tamale.
fact.
HAHAHAHA PLANES WITH MIDLIFE
I WILL FLY OUT OF HARLINGEN OR MCALLEN, THAT HAVE REAL COMMERCIAL AIRLINES. SORRY, FLY IN THE SKY WITH A PLANE THAT NEEDS EXTENSIVE REPAIRS. NO THANK YOU! THAT IS FLYING POOR CLASS. JUST LIKE HELEN RAMIREZ.
HELEN RAMIREZ ONLY KNOWS HOW TO WORK IN BED, NOW WITH THE MAYOR.
Money is continuously lost in this city and it’s sad. Has there been at least 1 project that has not failed? Let’s see how their airport restaurant project turns out after this. This city continues to not advance and is so sad when there is so much potential for Brownsville to grow. There’s no way McAllen’s airport should be better!!!
City Hall is all about lying. And we're paying these dumb people how much a month? Use the money to buy new bases for the softball fields!
Eldelasprietas
I go to Las Vegas from San Antonio, it's cheaper and I don't have to pay for parking at the airport due my veteran's status. Just went to Orlando, FL, from San Antonio non stop compare to flying out of Brownsville with a lay over in Dallas for 5 to 6 hours? The gasoline I spent going and coming from San Antonio/ Brownsville was 50 dollars compare to spending and extra 500 dollars flying out of Brownsville to Orlando!. It's not worth flying out of Brownsville to anywhere. Close the airport and kicked out all those high rollers of COB rats from the airport. These rats are just sucking taxpayers monies into their pockets. COB is just plain stupid and the city mayor and especially the city manager are idiots. How much money is the city of Brownsville paying for empty seats on this airline?
Our city is a money pit
Mcallen is laughing their ass off. We can't keep an Airline busy even to Los Vegas! Another venture that flopped.
Worst airport, worst downtown area…
Ya se le hacavo el pedo a el caravan of teachers.
Brownsville airport should be turned into an immigration shelter.
“Seasonally”, as in the biggest travel season of the year. Yet Another Browntown boondoggle funded by the hardworking citizens, (the legal ones) of Brownsville.
"Total Alignment" is nothing but Total Bullshit as true leaders lead by example something nonexistent in the entire city management staff.
2.08 pm yes i agree with, its OPM operating status-Other peoples money. For many years or decades, the City has been an ATM for many of these failured ventures, Titan Tires, that Ex Nasa guy venture at the airport-stole the money and ran, at the Port of brownsville failed international bridge but eddie lucio-sucio got a big fee for that. Everyone knows Brownsville is easy prey for the pickings. Helen Ramirez is just there sitting pretty and collecting a check, does not have the experience to run this large city and neither is that idiot police chief guy aka wanna be asst city manager. and thats the plain TRUTH, Merry christmas you filthy animal.
All the other valley airports are adding flights and airlines as Brownsville flounders in failure. I have not flown out of Brownsville since Branniff left in the 80’s !
Fire the airport board of directors!
8:23am.
EVEN THEN THE FLIGHTS WOULD GET CANCELED. NOT ENOUGH PASSENGERS. AND THERE I GO, HARLINGEN, TO GET BACK TO AUSTIN.
Been to the McAllen airport and it's very difficult to imagine it being a suitable alternative for exiting the valley.
They have zero supervision inside the terminal but outside they have the parking lot toll collectors (they also work as bouncers in local night clubs) and LEOs in patrol units (who lavish themselves with coffee and donuts) to enforce the collection of exorbitant parking fees.
Other than the Border Patrol sending out hundreds on illegals granted entry to meet up with family in the USA there are minimal locals.
The illegals board the flights (mostly men in their 30s with newly acquired green cards) with a large letter size envelope with lots of Immigration paperwork for themselves and the infants the carry on board with them.
All of these men look very healthy.
Not one obese guy among them.
These guys will likely be doing yardwork or working in restaurants.
Wonder where the mothers are?
The mothers are likely working in Houston.
Mostly as maids and nannies. (they also receive SNAP and will eventually Section 8 housing and they will supplement their benefits selling tamales on the side for $10 a dozen - all cash sales).
The children will eventually be classified as special needs and receive $800 a month in Social Security benefits.
These very nice ladies likely crossed illegally a few weeks earlier and now await their babies to be flown in with their fathers or other male relatives who are promptly reporting for jobs already prearranged by smugglers as the new guys have green cards).
What a world we live in.
It's no wonder the illegals make the dangerous journey to get here.
Recall hearing one of them comment they "the streets are paved with gold" in the USA.
God Bless Biden?
God Bless America?
fAT BESTERIO TOOK THE MONEY AND RAN THE BRIDGE IS IN HIS BACKYARD. go check it out!!!
FATSO purchased a million toy cars, he's still counting them...
Get rid of all the airless port members and the director they are useless only runs the vending machines without no cheetos and only ONE crop duster. All the buildings there are falling apart, can't rent them. not even for the illegals feds want good buildings not shacks... FIRE THE AIRLESS DIRECTOR NOW
Brownsville needs a direct flight to Monterrey, Mexico City and Cancun.
Also a flight to San Antonio.
all the airlines charge the same....all seats are expensive.
It is sad to see so many Americans flying from Matamoros to Mexico City because there is a daily flight: a plane arrives at Matamoros and the same plane leaves to Mexico City.
THERE ARE A LOL OF PRIVATE PLANES TO TAKE YOU ANY WHERE HERE AND INTO MEXICO AND THEY ARE NOT TOOOOO EXPENSIVE CHECK IT OUT..
The city manager and airport director are not doing her job. Once they get a contract, they sit back and say " whew", but don't continue to negotiate. I guess they need to hire outside experts to do the job they were hired to do and our city leaders just don't care or hold them accountable.
Except for the new terminal, all other airport properties are falling apart Thanks to the ex director who left a mess.
Cheetos any one? Not at the airport their vending machines do not carry cheetos, the airless director is gringo he prefers caca-guates...
THAT PORT BOARD NEEDS TO GO DISSOLVE IT NOW USELESS AND PURA RAQUETA. RATAS RATAS Y RATAS...
Helen Ramirez, Port director and Brownsville leaders , "Crickets". City and County are more interested in keeping Musk happy. Helen Ramirez, keep the projects alive while they're still active.
lady in orange nice in a group of changos/as.
Just think of how much better it would have been with Fly Fontera.
Let me explain the fraud to you peasants. In the past couple of years the Brownsville airport was used to fly massive amounts of illegals out of the country. Multiple flights a day. The COB used those passenger numbers to inflate the need for a new airport and to gain the interest potential airlines. Airport gets built with massive hidden cost. Then, the Feds moved the whole operation to better and more secure airport facilities in Harlingen leaving Brownsville holding the bag.
Si let's make the rotary club presidents the airport board member
Oh wait that backfired and costs us lots of monies
