MAYOR COWEN OWNED PORT WAREHOUSE TOTALLED BY FIRE

Special to El Rrun-Rrun

The huge fire that totally destroyed a warehouse overnight Thursday at the Port of Brownsville belonged to current  Brownsville Mayor John Cowen, according to Brownsville Navigation District sources.

The fire is still under investigation, but early indications are that a spark from a welder started the blaze which then ignited bales of used clothes and consumed the building, they said.

Brownsville Fire Chief Jared Sheldon  told Valley Central that high winds and a partial collapse of the roof made it harder to extinguish the flames. He said firefighters would remain at the scene all day and into the evening to extinguish the burning clothes.

The Brownsville Fire Department reported no injuries. Los Fresnos, Harlingen, Port Isabel and La Feria Fire Departments assisted in putting out the blaze.

Although the Navigation District owns the land, Cowen leases it and owns the warehouse, they said. It is unknown who is leasing the space from the Brownsville mayor. Cowen owns the warehouse.

Another warehouse building burning down? Seems to be a common occurrence in |Brownsville, Texas. Perchance are there any studies as to how many warehouses have burned by "accident" in the past forty years. Seemed there was a rash of warehouses burning in the 14th street area some years ago. Is it an insurance scam? Is someone benefiting? I don't know? Just asking dumb questions.

And his uncle Ralph owns the Port of Brownsville. I wonder if this fire brought back memories to Ralph, about the fire that destroyed their home on Adams and 6th way back around 63-64. They were left with only the shirt on their back and thank God for his dear Mother, our English teacher at Central, who had to go to work with her house slippers cause she lost everything. She was one tough lady and was so sincere and honest and put up with so much while raising 8 or 9 kids. Sorry, John, but i=I am sure someone will provide you with a grant to start over, since all the other mayors got grants to start their own businesses.
