ST. LUKE PRIEST CHARGED WITH SEXUAL ABUSE OF A CHILD

Cameron County District Attorney Luis Saenz

The Catholic Diocese of Brownsville announced that a priest has been removed from his duties after he was accused of sexual misconduct with a minor.

In a statement Tuesday, Bishop Daniel E. Flores said that a report was made against Father Fernando Gonzalez through the Victim’s Assistance Coordinator on Feb. 2.

“On February 3, in keeping with diocesan policy, I removed him from active ministry and have prohibited him from exercising any priestly ministry anywhere,” Flores said in the statement. “The individual who came forward, who is now an adult, spoke to the Diocesan Victim’s Assistance Coordinator, and was advised to report the allegation to the police.”

He said that the investigation is currently in the hands of law enforcement, and that the diocese will fully cooperate with the ongoing investigation.

The Catholic Diocese of Brownsville did not provide any other details regarding the allegations or where Gonzalez was priest.

The Cameron County District Attorney’s Office on late Tuesday afternoon issued a press release saying that Gonzalez has been charged with continuing sexual abuse of a child, continuous trafficking of persons, trafficking of persons, sexual assault of a child and sexual performance of a child.

Anyone who has been the victim of abuse within the diocese is also encouraged to contact the Victim’s Assistance Coordinator Margie Garcia by calling (956) 238-1455, or send an email to margie.garcia@cdob.org.

Give him a chance to explain. It is probably a misunderstanding.

The kid was dancing.
The family came to visit from Mexico and one of them had no legal documents.
Maybe he touched the stomach of the kid, just playing around.

Bishop Flores should come forward and explain. Do not say, we can not explain because it is a matter of the Law.

If he doesn't explain, people will not give money to the church.
Please Bishop Flores, lie to us. We need to believe in you.

This country thanks to democrats has become a country where your guilty first before being able to prove your innocence. Socialist! Let's wait for all the facts in this case before we condemn the man.

The Catholic Church should inculcate in its primary disciples not to corrupt the children. When a priest starts getting molesting ideations he should be able to have an emergency phone number that provides help.

I am Catholic but this is the main reason why I don't go to church. BTW this happens in every religion. How can a priest hold people accountable of the 10 commandments when they are the ones letting the devil worm its way into the most innocent of God's children. I just can't accept this. No!

"However great my fault may be today, the Lord forgives me, if I sincerely allow myself to be examined by him, and am really prepared to change,” the 94-year-old retired pope wrote.

This is a supposed apology from Pope Benedict. If you read it carefully you realize that it is a game of words.

To get near the children, the Church FORCES all people to attend a workshop and register and then we get to watch a movie.

When I read the comments, I see this man has already been convicted by public opinion. He can be guilty as charged or innocent for lack of proof; but we already assume because of the cases presented in the Catholic religion. We assume the person a child. Child is anyone under the age of 18 (17, 16, etc), could be a MALE OR FEMALE. The person waited until now that he/she is an adult (WHY?).
Anonymous 1:44 PM the church doesn't FORCE anyone to attend a workshop or even watch a movie. You can leave the moment you don't agree with the workshop or the movie. I taught at a Catholic school and had to attend the workshop. I learned content and stayed at free will. The public school system does the same thing when you attend in service workshops. IF he is cleared of wrong doing, the public embarrassment is such that he will not return to church duties. He has already been stripped of ALL liturgical activities. If he is guilty, he will be like any ordinary criminal and go to jail. The public opinion has already crucified him. I am NOT defending the man but in our modern technological world we already throw the stone without knowing who the un named "victim" is and the proof to the accusation .

February 16, 2024 at 2:53 PM, yes your correct but it's a lot of charges especially the trafficking part. Something tells me he's not alone in some of this. As long as the truth comes out everybody should be OK with that no matter what direction it goes.

It's possible the illegal immigrants are sly foxes.

They are strengthening their asylum applications by claiming the priest abused them.

They could also have a wind fall cash settlement with the diocese too.

If they get asylum and/or cash settlement they're striking gold!

Church is ripe for this type of con.
