Special to El Rrun-Rrun
On his first tour, he served in Intelligence out of Saigon.
On his second tour, he went into infantry and served on the front lines.
Upon his honorable discharge he earned his Bachelor's degree from Texas A&I, Kingsville, his Master's in Education from Pan American University in Edinburg, and his Ph.D. from Rice University.
He taught one year in Brownsville High School, another year in Harlingen and began teaching in Pace High School when it opened until he retired 2006.
Sparky was very popular with students and taught summer school in other campuses and at the University. He was a great chess player. Over the years, he formed a special bond with his students. If you were a student in his class, he was one teacher you will never forget.
We extend our condolences to his friends and family. Peace be with him.

Montoya, I know you're all for freedom of speech, But I get enough brain damage from listening to Trump. Fuck these putos, they wouldn't make a pimple on Dr. Esparza's ass. It's the same simpleton's who get some sort of thrill insulting your Mom, the dead, etc...

First graduating class Pace 1979. Mr. Esparza “Sparky” never mentioned that he was a Vietnam veteran. You could never tell by his passive demeanor. Commenters on this blog could learn humility from this man. The surviving family can be very proud and take comfort that Sparky touched so many lives in a positive manner. Peace be with you. ✌️

Our condolences to Jose’s family. May God Our Father Bless Jose’s Soul and have Jose in the kingdom of heaven with Jesus Christ, Our Lord. Amen.

Joe Esparza was a fellow BHS Class of 1965 alumni. He was a fun guy but somewhat reserved. Blew my mind upon reading his Obituary. Vietnam Vet 2 Tours and PhD upon his return back to the world and then choosing to stay in his hometown Brownsville and become a High School educator. Imagine the number of students that he inspired . I am so proud of this dude! Above all, we all should learn from this man's humility. Now, this guy IS A HERO! No just some dodo that is called a hero simply for wearing the uniform. May you Rest In Peace, Joe Esparza.
