"CUANDO UN AMIGO SE VA, UNA ESTRELLA SE HA PERDIDO"

(Ed.'s Note: A mariachi band sernades the arrival of the casket containing the body of the late Ruben Herrera, a Brownsville attorney and Texas Southmost College trustee who died while traveling in Spain. 

Inside Ft. Brown Auditorium, with TSC President Jesus Rodriguez emceeing, numerous friends and colleagues heard accolades of his life, his profession, his travels and his love for family, and for the college which provided him with the first rung to achieve his career goals. 

His daughter Edna Herrera Dinsdale also an attorney, portrayed him as the guiding light of his family and a strong supporter of education as the way to provide opportunity to the community to uplift their educational level and improve their families' economic condition.

One of his last achievements was the grand opening of the TSC Law Center to introduce students to the legal profession, a project which he championed and was made possible with the collaboration of local judges and attorneys. 

Ruben had taken motorcycle trips all over the United States and into Latin America, culminating in his trip to the Patagonia in Argentina. Fellow biker and legal colleague Hector Garza delivered a stirring tribute to his friend and recounted traveling alongside of him on those tours. He stgated his tribute with the lyrics to Steppenwolf's "Born to be Wild."

TSC board chair Adela Garza tearfully remembered him in her heart-felt  tribute. The family requested that no photos be taken inside the auditorium during the memorial, a request honored by most participants.

"Cuando un amigo se va...queda un espacio vacio"

A sticker on the back of his BMW bike sums up his philosophy toward life. It says "you only live once" in Portuguese [so se vive Uma vez] and he savored and lived his to the fullest. 

Our friend left life too soon, but lived it well with malice toward none. He will be missed. Our condolences.)
