With last November’s passage of a constitutional amendment that more than doubles the state’s homestead tax exemption, there’s more reason than ever for eligible homeowners to take advantage of it.
Many Cameron County homeowners are not doing it, however, though the Boards of Realtors of Brownsville, Harlingen and South Padre Island have teamed up with the county Tax Assessor-Collector’s Office to address that fact.

The first event takes place April 10 at the Brownsville Board of Realtors, 1825 Central Blvd., from 9 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.
The second one is scheduled for April 17 at the Port Isabel Event & Cultural Center, 309 Railroad St., from 9 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. The third will be April 24 at the Harlingen Public Library, 410 76 Dr., from 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.
Assessor’s office personnel will be on hand at all three events to help county residents file for the homestead exemption in addition to exemptions in the Disabled Person, Disabled Veteran and Over 65 categories if eligible.
Tony Yzaguirre Jr., county tax assessor-collector, gave a presentation on the joint project between his office and the Boards of Realtors during the commissioners court’s regular meeting on Tuesday. Commissioners approved a resolution in support of those efforts, read aloud during the meeting by county Judge Eddie Treviño Jr., who encouraged property owners to take part and thanked the Boards of Realtors for organizing the events.
The homestead exemption amendment contained in Proposition 4, overwhelmingly approved by voters in November, increased from $40,000 to $100,000 the taxable value of a principal residence shielded from taxation by Texas school districts — delivering a significant tax break to eligible homeowners.
Carly Thomas, immediate past president of the Harlingen Board of Realtors, told commissioners during Tuesday’s meeting that she approached Yzaguirre last year about partnering with his office.
“I knew that that homestead exemption increase was going to pass in November,” she said. “I was super excited about it and I felt like not enough people know. We hosted it Nov. 28 at our little bitty Board of Realtors office.”
Thomas said 120 people showed up and all of them wound up getting the exemption.
“From that it’s just snowballed, and we’ve got three different Board of Realtors offices involved and we’re super excited that we’re educating the public on this homestead exemption,” she said. “So many people don’t know what it is.”

The homestead exemption is just a smoke screen to keep the increase of property taxes just months away hidden.
Good job Tony Yzaguirre ! You have proven once again that you are the BEST choice for Cameron County. Your experience and knowledge of the Tax Assessor-Collectors office is the reason you have earned my vote and support in the upcoming Run-off .
Cameron County voters do not to fooled by the inexperienced and misleading candidate Eddie Garcia. He has ZERO experience in operating an important office such as the Tax Assessor-Collector. Eddie is a con man on a mission to fool the voters of Cameron County with smiling pictures and shaking hands at events .
Eddie is a puppet for his District Judge sister to settle personal vendetta's on her behalf. Eddie is her latest Guinea pig to see if she can get one of her puppets elected to a County wide office .
Eddie is a Perdue puppet as well, looking to cash in on all the vendor money as possible. He brought Perdue into BISD and is hoping to do the same at the county .
Finally Eddie is in need of an elected office so he can hire all the women he has made promises to , so they can give him some TLC in exchange for a job.
Normally all these discounts are kept secret and away from the public, but remember he's not doing you any favors, ITS ELECTION TIME and he feels the CALOR (HEAT).....

MEXICANS are MASTERS of lying and deceiving. The TAX COLLECTORS will conjure up a way to recover what money is lost trough the lowering of property taxes. MEXICANS are as sneaky as they come!
What does it matter to get a tax exemption when the the county appraisal district raise the value of homes and businesses by 110 to 150 percent? It still the same or high taxes to pay. The solution to this taxing problem is get rid of the Cameron County appraisal district and let the cities set their own home appraisal district. The correct value is the value you pay for the home or business. Second , no tax increases if you keep up maintenance on your home, like repairing wear and tear by the years effecting your home. Third, a percentage of the home should depreciate by the years, unless someone wants to pay a million dollars for a home worth only 50 thousand. Also, to get raid of the rat that is elected to be the tax collector!

You people amaze me. In most states even with a homestead exemption, if you are sued and a judgment is issued, they can take you home to pay it. In Texas they cannot. The most they can do is put a mechanics lien on your home if you failed to pay for a new roof for example.
My home is appraised nearly $200,000 less than the offers on my home.
CCAD always appraised way under the true value. Right now I am trying to help a senior to sell a residential lot in Laguna Vista. It is appraised at $5,000. I search for the same lots for sale in Laguna Vista will get her $45,000.
And you people who complain about the port taxes. Try looking at your bill. It is nearly nothing. But the port produces at least a billion in revenues.

The first and foremost important step is to get rid of the "Historical Designation " bullshit on personal homes and businesses. Start making these greedy people pay what everyone else is paying. In my opinion, Historical Designation should be limited to museums or other public buildings not personal homes. But I get it, most if this bullshit Designations belong to former or current elected officials, the very same people that should be setting the example for their constituents. Totally pathetic.
Homestead has been around for years. Why is it what Yzaguirre is making it seem like it’s something new. Believe me he’s not the best choice he have for Tax Assessor Collector. He’s only doing this because he has a challenger and knows he’s getting his ass kick. It’s all politics. Yzaguirre is lazy. He’s giving us bad service in all the County Offices for years. I have to agree with March 30 / 9:35 that Homestead Exemption is nothing new. Yzaguirre just WOKE UP and realized he's got an opponent. His clika don't want anyone to look into his closet nor lose that $ and properties. They're REALLY trying to keep him in. Can't afford to lose that position as the rest will be a domino effect!
