VISITATION, ROSARY, THIS WEDNESDAY FOR WILLIE DEL TENAMPA

Special to El Rrun-Rrun

Brownsville - Guillermo "Willie" Medina, 62, died Saturday, March 16, 2024, at Valley Baptist Medical Center.

To those who knew him, Willie worked for a communications company, but also ran the Tenampa Bar, a working class bar on 2525 E 14th  Street where raza gathered regularly to socialize, play pool, dance, hear live conjunto music,  y a echar mosca.

In the old days – when 14th Street was 14th Street – it was one of the pit stops between the Monkey Bar and La Catorce Bar as patrons bar-hopped up and down the strip. It is located almost directly across from Charlie's Bar.
Its walls are decorated with photo collages of current and long-gone patrons celebrating birthdays, holidays, or watching the Dallas Cowboys, hoping their porra numbers would hit. A grill behind the bar was kept burning and botana de  pollo, fajitas,  tripitas, and ribs was often dispensed to those present.

Throat surgery slowed him down, but didn't stop him from continuing operating El Tenampa.

Willie was born October 28, 1961 in Brownsville, son of Jose Medina and Maria de Lourdes De Leon Medina. He is preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Ricardo Medina Sr and 2 sisters, Elizabeth Medina and Jessica Ann Medina

Left to cherish his memories are his wife, Yolanda Compean Medina his children, Willie Medina Jr. , Billy Joe Medina, Javier Lorenzo Medina (Merary), Yolanda Medina (Rafael Garcia), Lourdes Isabel Oregeron (Cameron); his brothers, Jose Medina III (Connie), Gustavo Medina, Marco Antonio Medina; sisters, Elena Cano (Carlos), Maria de Lourdes Medina-Pena (Rene). Also surviving him are 14 grandchildren. As per his wishes, he will be cremated and buried at a later date.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, March 20, 2024 from 3:00 pm to 9:00 pm with a rosary at 6:00 pm at Salinas Funeral Home - Chapel of the Heavens in Brownsville.
A funeral chapel service is scheduled for 7:00 pm.

Nuestros pesames a su familia y que descanse en paz.

Since the Brownsville Herald has left Brownsville, the only source for the obituaries of many of our friends is learned from your blog. I knew all the Medina family from my time at Webb Elementary. All those children were properly taught how to be respectful
and enjoy going to school. The parents were so supportive and involved in their school activities and I was lucky to have had a special relationship with them Webb and later in high school. My condolences to the whole family, especially, Joe,Gus, Elena and Ricky who once called me Miss PE.

Juan, confirmation has come that Ben Neece made it upstairs, Rene O. hasn't yet and Ruben Herrera is still a question mark.

By the way, Montoya, St. Peter says you're in the red, ese.

Willie never made it to Yankee Stadium, Juan. He loved Mickey Mantle and Yogi Berra.

A great loss for the community. The bar owners of 14th street provide a distinct culture to our city: the underground life of the lucky ones. People that spend money on beers, music and beauty. Esos que no llegan borrachos ni salen borrachos: solamente muy alegres.

Please refrain from the obituaries. I'm afraid of entering your blog fearing I might see my name!
