GARCIA: SOUTHMOST TAX OFFICE WAS A WASTE OF PUBLIC MONEY

Special to El Rrun-Rrun

He said it on many occasions. Whether it's been in forums, in podcasts, and in general conversations with voters, he has affirmed and reiterated his viewpoint on the construction of a satellite tax office to provide service to the people of the Southmost area, the fastest growing population in the city's southeast side, was a waste of public monies.

Edelmiro "Eddie" Garcia, locked in a runoff race with incumbent Cameron County Tax Assessor-Collector Tony Yzaguirre, has said that he would not have built a satellite tax office in the Southmost area because it was unnecessary and could have been avoided if the existing tax office downtown concentrated on quality customer service and not the quantity of offices countywide.

In numerous occasions, whether in forums sponsored by the Brownsville Board of Realtors February 15, the podcast interview held February 8, and in the Brownsville Police Officers Association forum February 13, he has unequivocally hammered home the issue that building a tax office there was a drain on the county.

"I believe in quality customer service, not quantity," he extolled.

Garcia, a current Brownsville Independent School District board member, whose board is facing a $20 million deficit and has had to consolidate schools to trim expenses, seems to have hit upon this theme – that Yzaguirre's construction of satellites offices around the county aren't necessary and a waste of public funds. And pointedly, when it came to closing schools and consolidating them, the board took at first crack at Cromack and other schools, all in the Sotuhmost area.

So far, the county tax office has 11 satellite offices to serve far-flung areas like Rio Hondo, La Feria, Port Isabel, San Benito and Los Fresnos. As of yet, no elected officials from these areas have voiced any complaints to the county for bringing the service to their communities.

But Garcia wasn't ready to respond during the BPOA forum when Cameron County Pct. 1 Commissioner Sofia Benavides took issue with his comments that the construction of a county tax office to serve that historically underserved area was unnecessary to serve one of the fastest growing areas in the county,

"We have always been underserved," Benavides explained. "I stood up and told him that I took offense at his remarks that the office to serve our people was a waste of taxpayers' money. Southmost has more than 47,000 people. It's like a small city. In fact, it has almost twice the people that San Benito has. They have one there. Why not the people in the Southmost area? The services that office brings to that area are long overdue. We have ben forgotten for too long. Eddie was wrong."

And what's more telling, perhaps, Benavides said, was that Garcia attended the ribbon-cutting of the Southmost satellite office the day after the BPOA forum and posed immediately to her left representing the BISD to celebrate the construction of the facility.

"Pero bien que se tomo la foto during the ribbon cutting," she pointed out.

Dice Rosa Herrera que Eddie García la tiene chiquita

Little Eddie, the only thing that was a waste of time was YOUR time at Brownsville PD. Never worked a "real" case, only got through with pee-wee cases. In the end, when it was time to get back on patrol from your desk you decided you could not handle it and retired instead. It's time to go back to Porter and put on that old cheerleading outfit, or was the cheerleader Felix Sauceda? Either way both of you are worless...

The Southmost area needed a tax office. What Edelmiro needs to be doing is taking care of BISD.

6:22 BTW la tiene Chiquita porque esta chiquito. However, it was with that Chiquita that Rosa Herrera got hot. Maybe he put it in through the back door ...we don't know...or want to know.

I attended a lively police forum on February 8, where Mr. Garcia made some pointed comments about the tax assessor-collector's services and the proposal to build a new multi-million dollar building. He highlighted that similar services are already being provided free of charge to the county at the Brownsville Community Network Center and HEB, and questioned the need for additional expenses, especially when county employees have not received raises in years. It's understandable that he wanted to rebut Sofia Benavides's comment, but the moderator maintained control of the forum. Mr. Garcia's witty response, "He wasn't running for county commissioner," showed his quick thinking and sense of humor. It's great to engaged in local issues and attend forums to stay informed.

Juan i know the county at one time had a small office in front of HEB on Southmost road but was never open. Considering what it cost for construction i would say it was a waste of taxpayers money not that this will improve the poor service by the tax office, EZYGUIRRE and SOFIE both are dinasours of the democRAT party and need to be replaced ya.

I met Fela, the love of my life, on January 21, 1974. We'll celebrate 48 years of marriage on December 18, 2024. This wonderful Chicano blog takes me back and I can feel her in my arms, swaying and spinning on the dance floor.

Thank you y gracias.

Mr. Montoya do you feel intimidated by calling out Sofia Benavides or Adela de la Garza? Reason being is that you interviewed her and will not allow negative comments, even knowingly that she is a RATA. This is my opinion

LETS GET SERIOUS. LITTLE EDDIE WILL LOSE.

A VOTE AGAINST EDDIE IS A VOTE AGAINST DENISE GARZA, DANIELA LOPEZ VALDEZ AND JUDGE GARCIA.

Just about everything can be done through a computer. In addition, everyone has a car and a cell phone. Additional buildings are just a waste of tax payer dollars. But I guess city and county employees have nothing better to do but attend ribbon cutting ceremonies. I'm just waiting for my property taxes to increase again. Brownsville could be a beautiful city if it wasn't for all the corruption and special favors among democratic politicians.

Weren't services already being provided at the police building across the street by HEB? Why spend money when you don't have to! Unless there's an alterior motive($$$), which it's probably the case. Plus, it's election time. Time for change!

Eddie doesn’t stand a chance

Services were already being provided at the police building across the street by HEB and HEB as well, which makes the proposal to build a new building fiscally irresponsible. It's understandable to question the motives behind such a decision, especially when it comes to taxpayer money.

It's crucial to hold elected officials accountable for their actions and decisions, and to consider new leadership when necessary. Skepticism and commitment to fiscal responsibility are essential to ensuring that our community's resources are used wisely and effectively.

We need to keep speaking out and demanding transparency and accountability from our elected officials. Our voice matters!

Peladito lambiscon y hypocrita , cuando la ceremonia del edificio Este enano calenton estaba en mero enfrente y sonriendo de oreja a oreja. Bien contento y feliz!!! Y a hora esta encontra del gasto ?? En BISD cuanta feria gastaron en cosas innecesarias. Y a hora muy preocupado El vato. Puro show Este chupacabra.

It's crucial to hold unqualified and inexperienced candidates accountable to make sure they DO NOT get ELECTED to office . Eddie Garcia has been a failure at BISD and now wants to be a PAID elected official. Eddie Garcia has proven to be opportunistic in taking photos at ribbon cutting ceremonies and then saying negative comments about such buildings and services being provided to the county. Eddie Garcia as a member of the BISD MAJORITY has done nothing but drain money from the district and has kept BISD in the RED.

Do not be FOOLED, Eddie Garcia has been bad for BISD and will be even worse at Tax Assessor-Collector.

Eddie Garcia BAD for Brownsville, BAD for Cameron County!

Little Eddie has a multi million dollar deficit at BISD and now he wants the same thing for the Tax Office.

Reading the comments I just realized that this new county building is a big waste of money.

I had forgotten that HEB next door to this location does the same service.

Wish someone could have suggested a better use for this property.

Too bad.

It's about time that our needs were recognized and addressed. Eddie's misjudgment is now evident - the Southmost Tax Office stands as a beacon of hope and assistance for all of us. Its presence offers a convenient and reliable option for meeting our tax obligations and seeking guidance. This new development is a positive step towards improving the lives of everyone in the area.

The Southmost Tax Office represents support and optimism for the community. Picture a scenario where the local HEB is crowded or has long lines; this new office introduces a fresh perspective on efficient work and excellent service, aiming to expedite processes and assist everyone promptly.

Eddie García has proven time and time again he doesn't give a shit about SOUTHMOST residents.
As an elected BISD BOARD MEMBER and who is the majority 4 has decided to close schools only in the SOUTHMOST area. Eddie Garcia as BISD BOARD MEMBER has left BISD financially broke and he is to blame because all his years as a board member he has been apart of the MAJORITY that control BISD. Now Eddie Garcia feels that a Tax office in SOUTHMOST is a bad idea. Yet Eddie Garcia wants residents of SOUTHMOST to vote for him ?

Eddie Garcia BAD for SOUTHMOST, BAD for Cameron County

All these ugly comments against Mr. Eddie Garcia show signs of Carlos Elizondo.

Haters gonna hate. Please don’t be fooled by theses snakes. Mr. Garcia is doing great things and these corrupt politicians don’t want to stop milking the system.

Mr. Eddie Garcia hasn't done shit as an elected official.

All Eddie Garcia has done is fill his pockets with money from vendors , promising jobs to women in exchange for sexual favors , and most importantly keeping BISD in horrible financial shape .

Eddie Garcia BAD for beautiful, bad for Cameron County

Damn Little Eddie you're truly powerful according to some of the comments. I wanna be like you! So easy to make assumptions, I'm gonna run for office!
