THE EVOLUTION OF A BUS SHELTER ON OLD PORT ISABEL ROAD

(BEFORE)
(DURING)
(ALMOST AFTER)
(A newfangled bus shelter erected this week at OPI and Coveway)
Special to El Rrun-Rrun

The city of Brownsville told bus riders that they would get 30 new bus shelters.
That was in May 2022.

Construction was scheduled to begin in November and was expected to be completed in either June or July 2023. Well, it's now May 2024, and, according to the city they're coming, aunque sea en burro.

The addition of the new bus shelters was discussed and approved at a May 3, 2022 city commission meeting. The city has 600 bus stops and of that number 100 have some kind of shelter. The new coverings were to be 5-feet-by-10-feet prefabricated bus shelters.

“We understand the need for additional bus shelters. The City has a couple hundred bus stops and we are prioritizing shelters as quickly as possible. We had eight new much-needed shelters go up recently in the Southmost area and will be constructing 30 more this coming year,” said then Brownsville Mayor Trey Mendez.

However, Brownsville being Brownsville a contract snafu forced the city to rescind an agreement with the original company and now the shelters, after slight alterations, are beginning to go up. The shelters, according to BUS-Metro honchos, would protect the bus riders from harsh weather conditions and have lighting in them for safety reasons.

The solar powered bus shelters were heralded to include benches, USB chargers, solar lighting, advertising space and a space to identify a passenger’s route map and bus schedule times. Also, they were to have sidewalks, ADA ramps and concrete pads.

Well, the new ones being put up now don't approach such luxury. USB chargers? ADA ramps? Solar lighting? Don't think so. Bait and switch. There are, of course, none of those amenities. Just a roof and a bench with wire mesh walls. Think of them as hike-and-bike trails of caliche.

But there is a sign on the inside wall peddling advertising space that reads: GET NOTICED. ADVERTISE HERE.

In case you're interested in keeping an eye on the "progress," however delayed, here's a schedule that was released to commissioners when the work finally started. Take it with a grain of salt. Sientense pa que no se cansen.

Honestly, I’m just glad they’re making this a priority and constructing them! No complaints from me on this one Juanito!

what did that piece of crap cost the city - $10?

PITIFUL.

Just received this year’s appraised value of my property and again a substantial increase in my taxes. Who the hell is keeping all this money because it's definitely not being used to fix our streets, address our drainage issues or to improve the city such as constructing bus shelters for people? If local Democrats would quit stealing and if all city and county departments would be mandated to operate in an efficient and cost effective manner just maybe we would no longer see the drastic increases. There will never be an end to the waste and corruption until the citizen’s vote for new leadership. Or is Biden going to pay our property taxes before the election?

11:25 ask the county! The city just gave us a minor tax break! You obviously have no clue how to read your appraisal or how government works buddy. City is nonpartisan on political races, Brownsville hasn’t raised taxes in years, the county on the other hand, phew!!!! South Texas ISD, what a scam!!!! But you’re lost in your own lack of understanding things. Funny how you brought Joe Biden into your “county Tax appraisal” argument! Best of luck being lost as usual!!

They will place 3 or 4 by the river (busshelters) and a new bike trail is going up also in that area. The snap is also contemplating opening up an office close to the river, H&HS already has their office by the river.
HEB, WALMART and lopez are also gearing up. These stores are giving away chanclas to their first 1000 customers, chanclas will be in the color green...

Do not google bus shelters images.... you will discover that Brownsville leaders do not know much about waiting for a bus (under a hot sun, rainy days, cold weather).

Let the Architecture students from our local college, design a good bus shelter that is pretty, functional and modern.

This design is from 1940's - 1960s.

But when it's time to give out grant monies to the rich and powerful , there's no delay there!! They get what they want and right away !! Fuck those citizens that use the bus and fuck the bus shelters. They can wait, let them stand in the sun , rain or cold . The city commission don't care. They got bigger fish to fry.

The individuals sitting on the boards, councils, and legislatures who meet to decide the appropriate rates in this area are mostly democrats. They hold budget hearings to determine how much money must be allocated to provide the various services required by the local community. As for the amount each entity is receiving this is not stated in the Notice of Appraised Value. As for my mention of Biden no seas pendejo! Biden will dish out money for anything to remain in office so he just might pay for our taxes.

the rich and famous get bike trails y los pobres bus shelters made of telas so rain can get in and save on water. pobres no wonder I saw a bunch of them carring bags of soap (fab).

Thanks Mr. Montoya. If it wasn't for your continuous attack on the city administration for their failure to provide for the people of this community nothing regarding the shelters would have been done. GREAT JOB!

The city of Alamo here in the RGV is looking for artist to paint murals in their downtown stores, FOR FREEEEEE and show their skills. Here we give anybody 300,000 dollars to paint dilapidated downtown buildings, instead of fixing potholes, flooding, traffic lights and other important city infrastructure.

WHAT A DIFFERECNE HAVING MONEY TO THROW AWAY MAKES!!! JUST RAISE OUR PROPERTY TAXES!!

VOTE EVERYBODY OUT SPECIALLY THOSE TWO NEW ONES TRAIDORES...

The Republicans in power in various states and cities have their citizens in worse situations.
They people are addicted to drugs. There are no jobs. Plus most people do not see their reality and they think they are good. The Republicans have destroyed cities, towns, villages and the spirit of Americans.

Here people are so poor that they know if the get "chiflados" and lazy. Some parents do not tell their kids they are poor, in a difficult economic situation or in debt. Thanks to this blog, people show their anger at the leaders that want to destroy the Valley.

Juan city should do more bus shelters with EDC funding than those $$$$$$$ multi-million dollar bike trails. just saying for a friend.

BREAKING NEWS:::

There will be no rain, no sunshine and no windy weather for the next 10 years, the city will no longer built bus shelters and will use all of the funding on other important projects, like bike trails, murals and salaries for all directors and city elected officials and expect a property tax increase.

These are bus shelters? For who? Just one person or two? They are so small! Have you seen how many people who go to Walmart on Boca Chica and wait for the bus? They aren't going to fit into this so-called "shelter". Bus shelters near the mall or a shopping center should be larger to accommodate more people. This is ridiculous!
