WHAT IS CITY PROPOSITIONS A AND B ELECTION ALL ABOUT? TUESDAY LAST DAY TO CAST EARLY VOTE

City of Brownsville

The upcoming May 4, 2024, election will see residents of Brownsville's Extra Territorial Jurisdiction area, also known as the ETJ, voting on Proposition A. Those living in Brownsville city will vote on Propositions A and B. Both initiatives could affect the city and its growth area's development.

Proposition A aims to create the Greater Brownsville Municipal Development District (MDD). The existing sales tax in Brownsville, currently at 8.25 percent. It will not change for city shoppers. But, if both measures pass, the ETJ's  (five miles past the city limits) sales tax would increase from 6.25 percent to 6.75 percent.

The MDD would fund various projects, such as infrastructure development, park and recreational facility upgrades, (hike-and-bike trails for Rose), job training, small business development, and economic growth. The proposed sales tax increase in the ETJ would mean an extra five cents (0.05₵) on every $10 purchase.

Proposition B suggests ending two voter-approved economic development corporations, the Brownsville Community Improvement Corporation (BCIC) and the Greater Brownsville Incentives Corporation (GBIC). If both propositions pass, it's estimated that an extra $400,000 would be generated annually for economic development and quality of life projects.

The MDD would be managed by a board appointed by the Brownsville City Commission, although he has made public statements saying that the same administration and staffs would remain on the payroll despite their dismal performance in the past.  Brownsville City Mayor, John Cowen, Jr., highlighted the importance of the vote, stating that residents can fund future development with the additional funding throughout the City and Cameron County.

FOLK in Brownsville you all need to be extra careful with this election for this MDD Municipal Development district does not follow the same rules as the EDC guidelines, they can have meetings at any time, dont have to post meetings, dont have to disclose any information even financial to anyone, they operate under the radr, just look at the City of Elsa, they created one of these and for some mysterious reason they sales tax money disappeared. Same thing will happen here, good luck folks just a warning, PEDRO.

Just vote no , it's that simple, I did, because there is no trust in these elected mayor and commissioners. Just more fees, taxes, give aways to their friends and for you and I: the royal fuck. Bike and hike fees, resaca fees, maintenance fees, Tanaska fees, stupid fees! These idiots don't care and all the voters of Brownsville don't care either. The voters of Brownsville deserve to be screw time and time again. The rest of valley keeps going up while Brownsville goes into the toilet of stupidity.

The continuation of building MORE bike trails and the spending of millions on dilapidated downtown buildings (owned or rented by MOJADOS) will continue if those measures are to pass.

vote everybody out and stop building bike trails and painting murals at 300,000 dollars of YOUR PROPERTY TAX MONIES!!!

DO IT NOW AND SAVE MILLIONS NOT HUNDREDS as they are telling US the taxpayer...

Thank you. I did not know if this was good or bad. The wording of the two Propositions make it all confusing.

Vote Preposition A Yes
Yes to TERMINATE BCIC and GBIC
In case Proposition A is accepted, Vote Yes for Preposition B.

what craziness is this? That the City will do great things with $400,000.

I do not believe that. This money will disappear and the streets will flood, the city will have no green areas nor flowers, and the schools will close down, the museums will be full of dust etc

This has nothing to do with your property taxes pendejos! This is sales tax, which has been the same for eternity, mandated by the federal government. You mensos complain about GBIC and BCIC, well they’re trying to give you a solution but yet you continue to complain about property taxes which has nothing to do with this. For thé record, thé COB has given a tax break unlike the county. Don’t speak out of your ojo de Marano if you don’t know what you’re speaking of. Bola de complainers and idiotas!

This MDD will have to follow more rules than GBIC and BCIC. They are nonprofits and an MDD is a district aka government.

Yes many may be confused on the property/ sales tax issue, but you can’t tell me BCIC AND GBIC are here TO HELP ?? They may have been setup in the beginning to help but unfortunately got contaminated with corruption. Those two entities only help the rich / chosen few , families and friends!!! There is no need to insult and call people pendejos when they are frustrated and tired of being taken advantage by these entities. These sales taxes collected and grant monies should be fairly divided amongst the people/ businesses that truly need it, not only to the elite, wealthy and well connected leeches.
