THE SQUALOR OF URBAN REALITY CONFRONTS CHURCHGOERS

(Ed.'s Note: It's Sunday morning and senior parishioners at downtown's historic Sacred Heart Catholic Church at 602 Elizabeth – smack in the middle of downtown Brownsville – are met at the church doors by a sleeping local homeless man who has taken possession of the landing outside the main entrance of the church. He sleeps surrounded by his own trash and sleeps on the concrete amid splotches of liquid stains.

He sleeps on the floor shirtless surrounded by his filth. Today he sat against the church wall glaring at the people walking up the steps and entering the doors.

Locals know him as a mentally deranged man who wanders shirtless and aimlessly on downtown streets arguing loudly and angrily with himself.

We can understand the Christian charity of church officials and churchgoers, but the parishioners – specially the elderly faithful – should be guaranteed a clean, safe place to worship. Are we being too critical to ask for a safe, clean place for our viejitos to worship?

The longer our city elected officials keep ignoring our homeless problem, the greater the potential for something unfortunate to happen downtown, God forbid

Since we published the post above, one of our eagle-eyed readers sent us a mug shot of the man who has taken over the entry to the church. He is the man below who the reader says has been arrested numerous times for criminal trespassing.
He’s reportedly done a stint for more than 6 months in county jail and his MO is to get high and then starts hallucinating and starts attacking people by verbally threatening them he will kill them. Will the city do anything to help this man and remove the potential for him hurting some elderly person who  attend, or merely pass by, the church?)

The homeless mentally disturbed population is monitored by law enforcement as they have to follow up on complaints.

Is some law on the books to get them committed before they kill someone?

Library murder could have been prevented.

Too late for that one.

Homelessness is an issue all across our country. We r lucky that the issue is not as big as in Los Angeles and other big cities. Encampments and tent cities littered with trash , excrement and drug paraphernalia everywhere . So just add homelessness to the long list of socioeconomic problems in our country. Our local govt and law enforcement agencies need to come up with a plan to eliminate or at least slow this problem down before it gets out of hand. Hopefully they can find some time away from advancing their own hidden agendas and put a stop to this. For starters , why don’t they get “ Police Chief “ Sauceda to FOCUS on his duties as a police officer, instead of attending all the city luncheons/functions and wasting his time posting on Facebook ( according to all the rumors). More police patrols and enforcement would put a dent in this problem.. POLICE PRESENCE DOES DETER CRIME AND LOITERING!!

My friend noticed and said: According to a previous article ,the city’s biggest crybaby Zeke Silva called the cops on some dudes sleeping in an abandoned building across from his friends business. Did you call the cops on this guy at the church?? Ofcourse not !! that guy at the church is not interfering with his or his friends pockets $$$$. Only if it affects him or his wallet does he open his big mouth. Pinche llorĂ³n.

The homeless need help. Some may need assistance with mental health issues others may need help with drug abuse. Either way this population should not be left to wonder aimlessly through our city streets. After all these are human beings. City administrators should review the laws regarding the mandated referral of these individuals to agencies that can assist. I have noticed that through the years this problem is getting worse in Brownsville. Let’s clean up our city and do the right thing for mankind.

It's funny, this guy get high and drunk and he get a check from SSI, wonder how he did his paperwork done? Oh well, he has money for his stupidity and the church has money for their stupidity too? Why waste taxpayers monies to help these assholes it time to get rid of these problems. If you crybabies want to help these undesirable people, put them up in your homes.

The homeless people talk to each other. They share information about the best spots to hang out, drink water, take showers, go to the restroom, eat etc

They also arrive at cities one at a time, so they are not visible or seen as a problem. Then one day you notice them and you see that they are large numbers of homeless people taking over a street.

That is how it happened in San Francisco, Los Angeles etc Now, they do not go to towns where people are always united and checking the city for stranger danger...they do not stay there long.

Brownsville is not doing much about this issue because the homeless need to rob, kill, rape, harass residents and then they will act.

Assign a homeless to each elected official city and county, problem solved. elected officials are experts in what homelessness stands for, all of them always act if they themselves are homeless. they beg for money, food (pachangas), want free shelters, free rides, free everything and DON'T WANT TO WORK!!!

Juan this homeless problem has been around for decades yet the city of Brownsville city elected officials and city staff, previous city managers, dept heads have always turned their back on this problem hoping it will go away by itself but it has not and it wont. Now if you really want to do something for these less fortunate you might just create a bigger problem because once you start it where will all the money/aid stop and it will cost lots of taxpayers money. my 2 cents worth, Esta Cabro, Chuy.

That homeless man in the pic could be really dangerous. If Brownsville cops, county cops and even an order from the mayor would do, why don't they put him in a mental facility? I was once downtown at Kevin's Arts and Crafts store on Elizabeth and he came in yelling inside the store. I was in the back of the store and the girl at the counter was the only other in the store. She turned pale. You could tell she was scared. At other times I've seen him yelling and cursing at Mexican shoppers. Downtown survives on Mexican shoppers (Yes, Americans, if it weren't for those MEXICANS, the fancy restaurants only function at night and on weekends). Instead of insulting the priests or the rich old folks that attend the church, advise to CALL THE COPS to pick up this man disturbing or invading PRIVATE PROPERTY. The area where he sleeps IS PRIVATE PROPERTY. Forget Christian Beliefs . How about ordinary people LAWS.

THE CITY AND COUNTY CANNOT FIGHT CRIME.
DO NOT BOTHER WITH THE 10 HOMELESS PEOPLE IN TOWN.
OR MOVE THEM TO THE BIKE TRAILS OR THAT EMPTY BASEBALL FIELD OFF THE HIWAY.
