EVEN AFTER SPENDING MILLIONS ON HIKE-AND-BIKE TRIALS, BROWNSVILLE IS UNHEALTHIEST AND DEAD LAST IN TEXAS

(Ed.'s Note: When she came into office 15 long years ago in 2019, commissioner Rose Gowen preached of wellness and exercise and convinced her fellow commissioners in the nation's poorest city to pump millions into her pet bike-and-hike trails and city-funded cyclobias to fight obesity, diabetes, etc...Those rates haven't gone down despite her ridiculous self-serving election-year claims, yet the city is stuck in the rut of throwing good money after bad.

Those claims have ben proven patently false, with the latest survey of cities across the United States placing Brownsville – after Gowen's 15 years of diverting public resources and draining the city budget to her pet projects – dead last in Texas as the unhealthiest city.

Hypocritically, in 14 of those 15 years, the Gowen's home was exempted from paying city property taxes because of their application for historical status. So it has been the poor who have borne the brunt of the economic price for her delusions. She may have talked a good public-health game, but she had her stuffed taco and ate it, too; for free. Neat.)

While many American cities do their part to keep things healthy, whether that be building community parks, providing healthy food options, or promoting an active lifestyle, some places are exceptionally less healthy than others, and it shows.

So, what factors come together to create the most unhealthy cities across the country? Today we are going to examine how healthcare, food, fitness, and green space play a large role in the health of a city, and how these three Texas cities are severely lacking on all counts.

According to a list compiled Wallethub , the three most unhealthy cities in Texas are Brownsville , Laredo, and Corpus Christi in that order.

Here's what Wallethub had to say about compiling the data to discover the unhealthiest cities to live in across America:

"In order to identify the overall healthiest cities in the U.S., WalletHub compared 182 cities — including the 150 most populated U.S. cities, plus at least two of the most populated cities in each state — across four key dimensions: 1) Health Care, 2) Food, 3) Fitness and 4) Green Space.

"Our sample considers only the city proper in each case and excludes cities in the surrounding metro area. We evaluated the four dimensions using 41 relevant metrics, which are listed below with their corresponding weights. Each metric was graded on a 100-point scale, with a score of 100 representing the most favorable conditions for a healthy lifestyle."

Thats Rose Gowen for you. That robust individual is just out there grandstanding. And all her pet projects are just wasting away tax payers dollars. Its not her money $$$$. But the blame should fall on the shoulders of all commissioners court !! Its up to all of them to control this unnecessary spending and they’ve never done it. They are to busy advancing their own individual agendas. So this article comes as no surprise Montoya , since those hike and bike trails are just for show. The wicked witch of the south at her best!!

Here in Brownsville the people are too worried about how they are going to survive to be concerned about exercise. Depressing but true.

So let's do NOTHING! LOL. You're not precisely the greatest strategist. Rose Gowen has put in place a safe place (safe from traffic) for people to go and exercise, yet, they prefer to sprint for a Q-Taco. There is nothing worse than seeing a line of people in chanclas and pajamas at Stripes waiting for greasy tacos. Just like anything, there needs to be a desire, commitment, and action.

People just need to stop over eating. They always eat extra and as much as they can fit into their gut. Your body can only burn so much of what you put into it, and the rest becomes fat. Especially if you don't workout and sit on your ass all day.
Why do you thing you never see a fat wolf, lion, or tiger in the wild... becuse they don't over eat.

Parks, neighborhoods and empty spaces need to have equipment to do exercise for free: pull ups, stationary bikes, benches for exercise etc Also, if you go walking in the evening, you will be killed by the mosquitos, and in the afternoon you will suffer a stroke. Here in the neighborhood, the walk routes are next to the ditches, and the irrigation canals surrounded by branches, trees, tall grass and lose dogs.

Many of the criteria where Brownsville is doing great are not mentioned in this article. Brownsville eats at home: healthy food. Brownsville has the best nutritionist: the grandmother, the mother that stop you from overeating junk food. Premature - death is not an issue in Brownsville, people live long lives here. People eat fruits and vegetables here. The cost of medical visits is low. Mental health is not a problem for Brownsville, many doctors here in the Valley. Physical activity for adults is not a problem for Brownsville: watch people in the gardens, painting homes, cutting grass, walking all over the city. The problem is that this study wants more: parks, more people to go to gyms, and more restaurants that are labeled as nutrition/green places. The factors that make Brownsville a paradise do not count: family, small border town, clean air, good neighborhoods, buena gente and strong fathers and mothers that keep kids focused on learning.

The insults are pathetic. Your arguement is automatically muted by your own actions. No one will sit across the table from those insulting to negotiate better use of those funds. Unfortunate.
