Waving at the assembled participants, outgoing president of Mexico Manuel Lopez Obrador and his entourage on Monday attended the ceremony at the Matamoros side of the Gateway Bridge to dedicate a bust and monument to Matamoros revolutionary Catarino Garza.
Tamaulipas Gov. Americo Villarreal and Mexico City Mayor Caludia Sheinbaum – Mexico's new president-elect – were also in attendance.
The bridge had ben closed since Friday and opens today.
Obrador, who has written a book on Garza, was delivering on a pre-election promise to erect the memorial to the local hero.
A small number of protestors chanted "dictator" and the president's wife, Beatriz Gutierrez Muller, answered that the real dictator had been Porfirio Diaz before she delivered her remarks on Garza's life.
