How can a respiratory therapist with less than five years experience, which in Texas draws an average of $33,000 to $50,000 annually make a run for the U.S. House of Representatives District 34 ?
Aside from her household expenditures and other financial obligations, even with a Border Patrol husband, they, like many other families are struggling to make end meet from day to day.
But not our little Mayra.
According to records of the Federal Elections Commission, between July 2023 and June 2024, Flores was moonlighting as a politician and it has paid off handsomely as a side income. Just last week she was invited to accompany Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump to Nevada to snag the Hispanic vote which is critical to his effort to take back the White House. This is the group that has been savaged by Trump, calling them killers and rapists.
She has been paying herself a salary between $3,000 and $5,500 every couple of weeks or so during that time period. The total salary for that period totals $67,314.78. Nice money, if you can get it.
Flores aims to flip the Democrat-held congressional district that sits on the U.S. border with Mexico now held by incumbent Vicente Gonzalez and announced she had raised the money (mostly thru PACs) to boost her bid.
But the Federal Elections Commission has already demanded payment of $15,000 she paid herself in three "salary" increments of $5,000 before she filed for office and the itemized accounting of more than $500,000 she reported in expenditures from her campaign fund.
The citation, which was issued on January 7, concerns three $5,000 payments that Flores received from her own campaign between July and September 2023. The payments are coded as Flores’ salary. The FEC says Flores was not eligible for a salary in this period and must return the funds.
“A principal campaign committee may not pay a salary to a candidate prior to the filing deadline for access to the primary election ballot for the federal office that the candidate seeks,” the citation says. “In this instance, the filing deadline for access to the primary election ballot in Texas was on 12/11/2023. Salary payments made before this date constitutes a personal use of campaign funds.”
In addition to these payments, Flores’ campaign was also cited for failing to include required information about several donors on their FEC report.

She cheated when she stole photos from the internet of Mexican food (and some from Guyana, too) and said she was cooking it "en el rancho con familia" and then she literally stole the campaign slogan used by her then-opponent Dr. Laura Cisneros for the Republican nomination in 2022 to post on her campaign social media sites.
