My family came here legally from Mexico when I was young. I often wondered why some students started school days after everyone else and then left school early before everyone else. Turns out that these students were allowed to leave early to work the fields up north. They were migrant farmworkers. I have never done that type of work nor have I ever been on government assistance. I always thought it was the chicanos and not immigrants who did that kind of work.
