John Basham, a Trump supporter from Reno, Texas, is learning firsthand about unintended consequences. Basham, a former city council member, is now pleading with President Trump and Sen. Ted Cruz on social media after an executive order left his family in a tough spot.
The issue? President Trump’s recent federal hiring freeze. Basham’s wife had just been hired as a nurse for the Department of Veterans Affairs, and the family was preparing to move from Fort Worth to Waco for her dream job working with disabled veterans. Then came the executive order, and suddenly, her job offer was rescinded. According to Basham, his wife was "in tears and inconsolable" over the situation.
Taking to his X account, Basham wrote, "Following Trump's Hiring Freeze EO, VA Rescinded Her Job Offer! My Wife Is In Tears & Inconsolable & My Family Is Devastated!" He argued that medical professionals at the VA weren’t supposed to be affected by the freeze and blamed bureaucrats for misinterpreting the order.
“Bureaucrats Are Overapplying The EO To 'Hurt Trump,'” he claimed, adding that he believes this was an unintended consequence of the policy.
Ironically, just days earlier, Basham celebrated Trump’s move to send home 160 National Security Council staffers, calling them "deep state holdovers." Now, he’s on social media pleading for help from the same administration he supports.
Not surprisingly, reactions online have been mixed. One commenter summed up the irony, saying, "Why is it that we saw this coming and you didn’t?"
