IF NO ONE GETS APPOINTED FRIDAY, $184, 024 WILL BE SPENT ON A MAY 3 ELECTION TO REPLACE CASTRO ON BISD BOARD

 Special to El Run-Rrun

Depending on whether the six members of the board of the Brownsville Independent School District can agree to choose one of the applicants who signed up as a possible replacement for the late Erasmo Castro on Position 7 during a special meeting called for this Friday, the district will hold and election May 3 which will cost its taxpayers $184,024.

The deadline for applicants was noon Wednesday, but aside from unofficial sources, all district residents know is that eight candidates had applied as of early Wednesday before the deadline. The names of the applicants are not listed on the notice of Friday's meeting and are not listed as an attachment on the meeting agenda's supporting documents.

Unofficial sources say that they include some former board member and past candidates: Susan Galvan, Blanca Perez, Roman Perez, Marisa Leal, Caty Presas-Garcia, Farley Treviño, Tim Ramirez, and Agustin Anduiza.

Under the terms of the contract with the Cameron County Elections Office and the BISD, the district will pay an initial 60 percent ($110,414) of the cost of the election that upon approval and signing of the contract. The other 40 percent ($73,609) is due 30 days after the final invoice is presented to the BISD. The election will cover 45 county voting precincts with 54 polling places on election day.

The entire $184,414 can be saved if the board can agree on one of the applicants, but given the 3-3 stalemate on the board, it is doubtful that any of the candidates can garner a majority of the vote and be appointed to avoid the expense.

Castro was elected November 2024 for the Position 7 seat on the board and announced January 2025 that he had been diagnosed with Stage 4 pancreatic cancer. He died the following month, in February.

BISD lawyers have to decide what is best for the district. If a person is selected but the others complain? Spend the money and get Susan elected. If she doesn't win, BISD has to go to court.

major points to be taken into consideration in this issue, if there is an elextion who is it going to cost, the district, ie. tax payers. Some members have been harping on saving money, money has to be saved on this that and the other, yet they more than likely are going to vote for an election...then you have the possibility of an appointment, if a candidate is appointed hopefully it will someone that wants to move the district forward and won't take sides. Many have said, get Susan in.., ugh.. shes a trumper and pro-voucher.., how is this going to help education??? People are the board should be pro-public education regardless of where they went to school.., that is their purpose as board member for a public school district. Others want the people that ran before and lost..,..well one must remember the debate debacles each of them had..., one did not know the workings of schedules, one was not infavor of teacher planning periods, and one didn't know what was going on..., when thinking what is the best thing for the district, students, and ultimately the community.., it's a catch 20/20.., sometimes getting your wish is not always the best thing.
