A prominent Texas law office announced this week that one of its partners is no longer affiliated with the firm after the Progress Times contacted it Tuesday about a social media consulting “side gig” contract that the attorney signed with Raymondville ISD last summer.
According to records obtained through open records requests, attorney Nick Maddox signed a social media consulting contract with Raymondville under which the district agreed to pay his company as much as $48,000 a year.
Raymondville ISD has paid Maddox’s company —Chi & Puggle Co. — at least $18,000 since then, though the district can’t show a single piece of work the company did between when the board hired it last July and early this month.
Maddox represented Raymondville ISD as a partner with O’Hanlon, Demerath & Castillo. (As such, he represents the firm with its contract as board counsel with the Brownsville Independent School District.)
That law office said in a statement Wednesday that the now former partner never disclosed his social media enterprise to the firm.
“Although the arrangement was legal and all relevant facts were disclosed to Raymondville ISD, it was made without the knowledge or approval of firm leadership and was not disclosed to the firm,” the statement said. “Although the services provided were unrelated to legal representation, his actions did not meet our firm’s standards of transparency and professional responsibility.”
The firm says it received no compensation from Maddox’s side gig with the district and that none of its other attorneys or staff were involved in it.
’Hanlon says it intends to pay the school district back money Maddox made under his contract during the past 10 months.
“To restore trust and transparency, our firm will fully reimburse Raymondville ISD for any payments made under this unauthorized agreement,” the statement said. “We sincerely apologize to the Raymondville ISD Board of Trustees and Superintendent for this situation. O’Hanlon, Demerath & Castillo remains committed to the highest standards of integrity, accountability, and professional conduct.”
Maddox couldn’t be reached for comment after the firm announced his departure, but did briefly answer questions about Chi & Puggle Monday before asking to end an interview, saying he felt the contract with Raymondville ISD wasn’t newsworthy.
“This is just a side gig of mine,” he said. “I serve several different school districts throughout the state. My brother and I are into this, so I just sort of started something new.”
According to the district, the company’s services are currently paused but are set to resume next month, after election season.
Maddox said Chi & Puggle essentially provides social media data analytics to Raymondville ISD and other public organizations.
“It’s a social media company designed for governmental entities,” he said. “Clean them up and brand them and help them be more consistent with their online presence, just like private companies have.”
Raymondville ISD general counsel Gustavo Acevedo said services Chi & Puggle performed for the district included a lengthy setup process, an analytics report of social media reach, a few months of management and social media posting.
Maddox contradicted that Monday, saying that the district hasn’t used his company for social media posting yet. Public information requests seeking other work performed by Chi & Puggle didn’t reveal any analytics report or other documents that would indicate the company has actually done anything.
According to Maddox, Chi & Puggle isn’t working for any other Rio Grande Valley districts and primarily serves clients in the Corpus Christi area.
