A divided board of the Brownsville Independent School District continued the stalemate at last Tuesday's meeting by deadlocking 3-3 on the nomination to appoint Brownsville resident Martin Sarkis to replace the late Erasmo Castro.
Trustees Carlos Elizondo, Minerva Pena and Frank Ortiz voted for Sarkis – also appointed recently by the city commission to the seat now held by Art Rendon at the PUB – and the three other board members voted against the motion.
The board will again consider a nomination June 24. Among some of the candidates mentioned was Roman Perez, a one-time candidate for the city commission.
The board is under the gun to appoint a replacement for Castro's seat six months after it became vacant. That is August 14. The next election cycle is until November, well past the six-month requirement.

That is how it goes, the Board will choose a person they like and fits into the organization. It can be a parent, a friend, an exstudent, a former board member, a local celebrity...they just need to agree on the person they want.
